This is part of the autochange mechanism of a record player. It is the spindle on which the records sit. After playing a record, the pickup arm moves back to the rest position. As it does so, a cam and lever mechanism causes the bottom section of the spindle to contract, thus allowing the next record to drop onto the turntable ready to play.
