Solved MSE won't install

RaviR

New member
Hi there,

Been trying to reinstall MSE but it keeps giving Error code:0x80070005 error has prevented MSE from installing please restart your pc and try again . I have no other antivirus programs installed and after looking up the error code it suppose to mean it's not getting access to some files. I am the administrator so i have no clue what's stopping it from installing :( Any ideas/solutions?

Thanks.

Try and check if your copy of Windows is genuine, MSE only runs on genuine Windows.

Genuine Microsoft Software

It is. I had MSE installed before :( . I submitted a help request to microsoft support, hopefully I would get a response within the month.

well I don't know if this is going to help you but
0x80070005 is an Access is Denied error this is because either an application or executable does not have the necessary elevation to invoke a specific action.

In most cases running as admin should solve this problem, but not always.

It occurs to me to ask where the installer file is currently located.
Try moving it to the root directory and running from there.
Also right click it, go to properties and click the unblock button.
Finally disable any and all currently running security apps before attempting the run.

Is there a way to see what files are being denied access?
Thanks.

Just to be sure, are you downloading the same version as your OS version? I mean, 64bit for 64bit OS and 32bit for 32bit OS?
And yes, you can monitor the installation process by Tools like Revo Uninstaller Pro and selecting 'Install with Revo Pro'. This will save a log file of the changes made and may give some clue about the cause.

I have recently uninstalled McAfee when the subscription ran out.

I thought I did my homework and the solution was MSE + Malwarebytes. I had some issues with MSE that were important to me so I uninstalled it and bought Norton Internet Security 2011 (3 licenses for $75). I know there were other free options - I just couldn't be bothered. Norton seems fine.

I had McAfee on my system and it caused nothing but headaches.

What I found was that even though I had used Revo to make sure it was gone (or so I thought), there were still registry remnants that were causing trouble in running certain windows programs (such as updates, Malicious software removal tool and others) and I had to use the following uninstaller to make sure it got the last of it:

How to Uninstall McAfee Security Center at Instant Registry Fixes

Also, I read an article quite a while back that if you had a certain rootkit in they system, MSE would be unable to install.

You could try:

Run a free Norton Online scan. This will d/l the AV engine & run it in a sandbox, follow the directions:

Free Virus Scan - Free Antivirus Software | Norton Security Scan

Norton also makes a program called Power Eraser which does a rootkit check:

http://security.symantec.com/nbrt/npe.asp?lcid=1033

I'm running MSE with Norton 360 and they play well together on my sys, along with Comodo. Even when I had McAfee on my sys, MSE played well with that.

Based on what you've said and my recalling that article I read some time ago, I would guess you might have the rootkit that is preventing the installation.
