WMP crashes during media library update

I have windows 7 RC build 7100

Everything seemed fine untill I have installed Monkey's Audio and Matroska. However uninstalling does not solve the issue.

Now, WMP will crash after a random time while updating media library.

It does not matter what I'm doing at the moment of crash(I'm playing audio or not). and the mode the player is in(compact or full) does not change anything. At sertain moment I just get a message that the program stopped working correctly etc.

Note that I have quite a large music library mostly mp3. The folders containing audio may also contain text and image files.

For now have no other choice but to use VLC player...

Any ideas? do you need additional info? what and how to get it?

BTW is there a crash log I can analyze? Does it save a log somewhere?

I'm having the same issue. In my case I had Rhapsody already installed and working with Vista SP2 with WMP11 and all was well. Upgraded to 7 RC1 and suddenly WMP12 is crashing everytime I try to use it. I can work around it, but this is definitely a bug in at least WMP12.

As to your problems:

Since you are both experiencing this from different sources, we can see that it is not the individual players you installed that is causing the problem.
Try opening Command Prompt and typing "sfc /scannow" without the quotes and that will fix any registry errors that might be causing it.

Thank you for your suggestion. I tried this out and sfc said it did not find any problems. I did try running WMP12 again, and it crashed as described above once more.

Interesting.....
If you have your Seven disk, pop it in the drive and do a Repair install.

My problem was fixed by removing all the codecs.

It seems that Win7 is very sensitive with codecs installed on the system. I had to remove all of them with reboot after each uninstall.
Then I have installed win7 codecPack that allows me to play all the formats and does not crash any of the programs.

I would suggest for everyone who has a problem with WMP to verify if they have any of the "Core" codecs installed. If yes, they are known to conflict with many different programs of new generation such as AdobePremiere CS3, AfterEffect and (in my case) with WMP under Win7. Note that often "Core" codecs come with many different open source video utilities and are installed by default. Therefore, if you haven't installed it it does not mean that it is not there.
