Do you plan on upgrading from a 22" display? If the answer is no then save some money. You really don't need any of the cards previously listed. There are cards around $120-$130 that will give you excellent performance on a 22". I think the HD 5770 is at a great price to performance ratio. It will give you all the bells and whistles you need and and keeps you from wasting money. Now if you plan on gaming on a large display then sure look higher but IMO if you're sticking with your 22" monitor save your money or use the savings to pay for that ram upgrade you discussed. Here's a report from Tom's Hardware you can look at to help you make a decision:

Best PCIe Card: $100 To $175 : Best Graphics Cards For The Money: January 2011

At the bottom of the page you can choose the different price range reports and a heiarchy chart for all the cards currently on the market.

I'm not planning on upgrading from the 22" display I currently have. Its nice to sport multiple monitor, but the edges of the monitors would just be a sore :huh:

Then I wouldn't waste the extra money. Put the money where it's needed like a ram upgrade. The 5770 does Eyefinity, DX 11 and will run the latest shooters in high settings full AA and put you around 60-70 FPS. The only issue that may arise with you is that I noticed you have a dual core. There are some games that are CPU heavy and may keep you from getting full performance from your GPU.

How will the HD 5770 affect RTS? If I'm not mistaken, RTS are a lot more demanding than shooter games or am I misinformed? So with whatever I save, I could either allocate that into upgrading CPU and or RAM.

I wouldn't think one is over the other. I think Crysis(a FPS) is the most demanding game available and has been for years. I know it seems gamers who play shooters live and die by frame rate(no pun intended). But I'm no real expert as I don't play RTS's. I still think a 5770 will suit your needs. It had great benchmarks in WIC which is a pretty intense RTS.

I think the 6870 is great and probably the best card of the bunch. My point and just something I would want him to consider is why spend an extra $100 on a card he really doesn't need when that can almost buy him a Phenom II x 4 or 8GB of ram. Not trying to poo-poo on the 6870. Just trying to bring a different prospective. I just think it will help him to make a more informed position.

Sorry but it's certainly not the best of the bunch when you have a 6950 sitting in that lot.

And price to performance - the 6950, which oh BTW can be turned into a 6970!

Well looks like I'll get a 6950... than flash to a 6970 - Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 2GB Unlocked to HD 6970 :: TweakTown USA Edition :D

Assuming these cards are still around when I purchase one :)

You may be right. Sorry for missing the 6950 in the bunch. I didn't vote. But while it may be better is it enough to pay the extra $50 for an additional 6 FPS once it's flashed to a 6970. Not IMO. But hey to each his own.
