Hey and welcome to SF. We could be alot more helpful if you filled in the info in "my system specs" in your control panel. Could you tell us more about your system and what you want to do. I assume you have an internal drive that has somethings on it (an OS) or it is too small.
I just finished removing two external WD MyBook Essential drives from their external enclosures and finally got around to seeing the second larger of the two installed internally. The casing is different however while the drives depending on 3.5" or 2.5 for notebook will make the difference without use of a reducer bracket. i will tell you now, then later fill out my specs
okay, im about to right a novel here.
Heres my story.
i downloaded Windows 7 Build 7100 and had my laptop dual booted with Vista home basic and Win7. I mostly used Win7 full time, but i noticed that Vista SP2 came out so i downloaded it and stuff. but when i restarted my computer my theme was stuck in classic mode, and my prefrences would crash when ever i tryed opening it. (this was from Vistaglazz, because at the time it did not support Vista SP2) so i tryed to do a system restore from when i using SP1 but something happened and now Vista won't boot up. It just gets stuck at the screen saying "please wait...". i went on the brother/sister site of this site (vistax64.com) and over there they said i had to do a clean install of vista. so thats basicly why i need to back up my files.
i have 120gb of files to backup. but i like to play games and have lots of movies and other stuff, so thats why i want 500Gb.
i hope thats more then enough info
if not, then let me know
i have a dell inspiron 1521

You could perform an upgrade repair install rather then wrapping the whole thing up into the Windows.old folder at least until you have room to move 7 on a separate drive. The problem is that the model you posted a link for wouldn't the best option for a desktop being a 2.5" hard drive sealed into the external housing. Use that to back things up.
The method for performing a repair install starts off by already being booted in Vista to start up the installer there however. Repair Install For Vista - Vista Forums
Originally I had the external 3.5" models for storage here until deciding more internal drive space would be needed for everything from XP, Vista, and both 7 beta builds! Recently I dumped XP entirely once the RCs were out and now run Vista on the new Virtual PC beta as well as the XP mode beta. It takes a bit work however to get that going!(nothing like 8hrs. or more! )
Presently I ended up with two 64bit installs with another drive having the 32bit RC there which I'm booted in at the moment. It certainly helps adding in an extra drive when needed!
