Won't be too long before 1 PETABYTE (1,000 TB) drives start appearing soon for personal computers -- but imagine breaking one or losing that much data.

Here's an IBM announcement for 14 PB array from a year ago so "Expect to see them in the stores before XMAS".

Wow! :eek: 1PB seems huge but 14! Then again it wasn't so long when 1TB seemed crazy! I can remember buying a 256MB memory stick for about £15 5 years ago and at the time it was a bargain! Now for that price you can get a 16GB memory stick!

For a single PB drive, I don't think we'll see them for a while, considering the lengths Seagate and Western Digital had to go to to get more than 2.1TB drives working on consumer PCs to get around the logical block address limit.

No chance for single platter.

Though i would like to see how many platters is does take to reach 1PB.
There would have to be at least 240TB per platter (If my maths is correct).

For some reason, I'm feeling a bit skeptical of trying to use Drive A for this task... :sarc:

The last big improvement I remember reading about was a few years ago they started making the bits vertical in order to pack more onto each platter.

So such a drive, I would expect, would be a large box of platters.

There are physical limitations for the current drives, just as there are for processor chips.

I'm guessing 10 years, or there about. I'm far more interested in the possibility of laser driven processing though. They are saying it could reach speeds in the zetahertz range. ...I'll wait while everyone goes and looks up zetahertz...

Oh sorry didn't see this topic...LOL but this sounds very interesting... my 500gb hardrive is less than 50% full...cant imagine this much space.
