How long before searchindexer settles down?

Rebuilt my machine 2 day ago with Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. searchindexer.exe has been running at 50% CPU usage when I am not using the machine and around 15% when I am using it. When is that going to settle down? Profile directory is about 26gb (mostly in downloads) and a 2.5gb Outlook mailbox.

I checked and under Indexing Options it shows that 98,840 items are indexed and that it is complete. Don't get why it's still running with so much CPU usage.

If I click Pause, it does knock CPU usage to nil.

I cannot give you a specific time table for your question, but I can share my personal experience. After Vista and again after Win 7, it took quite a bit of time for my HD to slow down. My computer was indexing, making images, restore point etc. Wait a few more days, if things donot settle down come back and we take it from there.

It depends how much it needs to index and how often the index locations change.

Been over a month and any time I leave my machine for more than 5 minutes, searchindexer goes wonky. It will chew up 50% CPU. I rebuilt my indexes, same thing. I would disable it, but I do use the feature quite often. Anyone seen a way to get this to calm down and only index when there are legitimately new items to index?

Hi and welcome back. Its been about a month since you told us about your problem. Indexing should have been completed by now. Of course if you have a lot of files that you use constantly, indexing has to work overtime to put everything in the proper file. I will do a little research and see if I could come up with anything. I am sorry that you are having problems, because if working properly Win 7 is a great OS. Have a great New Years.

I agree it's great. I've been running it since M3. Been very happy with it. It does seem that it started acting a little strange when I installed my Intel 160GB G2 SSD.

Then possibly, it is not the indexing.

I just did a defrag and rebuilding the index again. I will see how that does.

How much does the indexer help? I only have 325 items indexed(turned most off). I only have favorites and the start menu indexed.

I think it in invaluable. I press the Windows key, start typing and I get what I am looking for instantly. Emails, files, Word/Excel docs, whatever. Finds programs too. I hate using the mouse so if I can keep my hands on the keys, that makes everything that much faster. :)

That makes alot of sense, I mostly use the search for windows applications, EX: Cmd, Regedit
