Win7 SP1 released to public

Hi all,
I see this morning the win 7 SP1 is available via update. Question is.........has anybody run an earlier edition and are there any problems with it?.........Is it better to wait for a while to see if any cracks appear?

I installed it back on January 15th. No issues whatsoever. None, zip, nada, zilch, zero.

Give it a go. Just create a restore point prior. Actually, SP1 will do that for you anyway. Really, no risk, or, at least, minimal risk, in my experience, which was typical when the RTM leak was running around back then.

The all in one iso is 1.9gb. That includes both x86,x64, and server 2008 packages.

The standalone installers are at the bottom of the list.

That's what I downloaded here being the last to finish along with the two individual exe versions. Once that finished up the installation went on without a problem other then the need for the command prompt action.

Apparently that was what was stalling the beta and RC releases when coming across the solution only once the rtm was available as far as drives with restored images running into SP1 installation stalls. No reverting SP seen this time around!

I'm running win 7 home premium 64bit so should I just download and burn the four 64 bit programs or is there any advantage in downloading the complete 1.9gb? Told you I was not the sharpest tool in the shed with comps :shock:

You can choose between one of the stand alone installers or going with the dvd iso or both. The 64bit exe download saw SP1 go right on here.

With the two options with the "msi" file extension you simply double click on the one you download to see that run. The second link on each is from a few additional updates added after the initial rtm posting most likely. But it only takes one since all are the SP1 simply in different packaging.

Have you tried using the "Windows Update Troubleshooter"? Says it solves these kinds of issues, so give it a go. Couldn't hurt...

Question, why is this important to update?

It's mostly a matter of security than anything else, but it also improves on what is already existing - things MS decided needed some tweaking for one reason or another for the OS to be better than it was before. I wouldn't particularly call it a necessary update as if you don't install it, your system will still run like always, however it is just better to keep your system up to snuff on updates than to let it slip behind.

I am sure somebody else will answer a little more in-depth, but that's basically it in a nutshell - security and minor improvements/tweaks.

With the beta and then RC I kept seeing the "reverting changes" message when it reached 99% and ended up rolling everything back. The same error message each time even with the rtm until finding the updated solution for anyone who restored an image to the drive they are trying to install the SP onto.

This is now something they updated when seeing the "mountvol /E" at the command prompt solution that saw immediate results following the required restart of the system.

Once other thing to mention is disabling any antivirus/firewall/spyware protections that could interfere with the install. That along with the latest updates just added should be a large help.

Question, why is this important to update?

The SP for any version is more then a wrap up of security fixes. It enables support for new features as well as newer hardwares not out while the particular version was in development along with fixes for any remaining OS bugs.

Besides seeing a new type of Dynamic Memoiry Manager for Hyper-V a good description of what is supposed to be included in SP1 was published last June. Windows 7 Service Pack 1 RTM Build 7601.17514.101119-1850 - Changelog - Softpedia

Just got back to work today and installed Windows 7 SP1 on my work PC. Same as at home, I got it through Windows Update, checked the box, let it do its thing ... took a little while but once it asked me to reboot, I initiated it and it started configuring the Service Pack, rebooted, then finished its configuration and all was good to go. This process took about 25 minutes or so on this older PC but once it was up and running again, much like at home, not much changed and it seemed to work just the same as it did before.

From my perspective at least, kudos to Microsoft for making this the most painless and quickest service pack installation I've experienced in a while.

Yeah same here. No noticeable difference. ran WEI and my graphics and gaming gaphics scores have improved by 0.1%

Won't work with Speech recognition program?

Not impressed with it! Have had to remove it as the Win 7 speech recognition program no longer worked after its successful installation. I checked our everything without success. Even Skype was working, but Win 7 speech recognition -no way!

Tried to contact microsoft support but ended up going round in circles! I have the Windows 7 Ultimate x64 retail edition and use a Plantronics headset.

I get the same error and thanks to the lack of info about which 'components' are supposed to be missing - I'm buggered if I know what 'missing' component is the culprit.


Out of curiosity, have you removed any Windows features via Uninstall a Program, disabled any services or altered any scheduled tasks?

Had the same trouble with mine. Turned off AV
went without issue.

Try this one in an elevated command prompt and reboot once you enter the command "mountvol /E". With the host drive here a system image was restored on one or two occasions since this case was built. Apparently the restoration doesn't fully mount the volume quite enough as you would see with an original install for the SP installer to carry on.

I ran right into the SP1 stall issue where the SP installer itself is unable to properly access the primary partition without some help. It could also be a bug with the installer while everything else works. Once you enter the command you give the system a full restart and see if the SP installer suddenly gets busy.

Also, for those that are having problems, one solution would be to start over with a clean install, and then run the DVD or exe file. There are so many variables like installed programs, what updates are already applied, etc, etc, that its just not going to work in some situations. Aside from right now, its general release, most of the time you would be applying it just after a clean install. Also if it hosed your system or won't install, I wouldn't swear off of it like some have done in the past with say Vista. At least give it a fair shake with a nice clean fresh install before condemning it from your system. Just my 2 cents worth.

Following the advice in this thread, I managed to get past the initial error, but unfortunately in my case SP1 failed after a reboot so I've done a fresh installation. Fingers crossed you have better luck.

(Sorry if it's been brought up already)

Having a 32bit system and 4GB of ram installed, I knew that windows wouldn't use my full 4 gigs. On my performance page it would state that I had 4 but told me in brackets (Using 3.25) but I noticed after installing SP1 that it now just says 4GB. I re-ran the performance test and my score jumped up.
