Right-click on desktop takes forever

Hi everyone, I'm a new guy here. Let's just get to the point.

When I right-click on the desktop it takes forever just to load the right-click menu. The desktop freezes but other applications works fine (i.e. WLM, Chrome). I tried Googling but can't find what I wanted.
I found a similar problem, but it was from 2009 involving NVIDIA graphic driver problem. --> This.
On a side note, my NVIDIA Control Panel also can't execute. Does this have any connection with my problem? I last updated the drivers with this.

Please do tell me if I need to provide another information regarding this. Thanks.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit, Intel i5, NVIDA GeForce GT230M, 4GB RAM.

Thanks Josh, I updated my system specs.
Regarding the slow right-click, I just found it a few hours ago. I also found out that I can't open my NVIDIA Control Panel because it's missing from the right-click menu.
And I forgot to mention that my system is also taking too long just to boot Windows and when logging in.

I'll do the clean boot when I have the time; them parents. :o

Do you have a drive mapping to a drive that is no longer valid ? IE an external drive or another drive on your network ? Phantom drives area killer. If you do have a mapping to something that isnt there disconnect it.

Hi sreedhav,
after the crash I planned to backup my files and recover what's left, so I plugged out the HDD and moved some of its contents to an external HDD. But then, I saw that the HDD is reading and writing well, no defragmentations and Error-checking returned no errors, so I plugged it back and just like that my Win7 was up and running again.

I don't quite get what you mean, but when I go to system restore I see one drive labeled: "C: (Missing)". I think this is due to my Windows crashed on November last year, assumption: bad sector in a folder. It repairs itself (not through System Repair) so I don't know what exactly happened. I didn't change any hardware since then, and my external HDD is always unplugged when not in use.

This needs to be corrected. Go to System Protection, highlight C(Missing) listing, click Configure and turn it off.

This will force the correct recovered C drive to reappear in list so you can turn it on, Configure up to 20% HD space for longer lasting restore points.

Install Malwarebytes, update it, run a Full Scan.

Run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

Check also the number of startup programs you have starting up. I only allow AV and gadgets as others are freeloaders on your RAM/CPU and startup time. You dont' need NVidia control panel unless you are overclocking, or audio software starting up unless you're running a theater. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1401-startup-programs-change.html

Thanks for the suggestions, I did a full system scan on another PC as I can't seem to finish the scan on this PC. And yes, there was a Trojan, it was cleaned there. But it didn't seem to solve the problem, I still have lags and slow logging-in to Windows.

Regarding the NVIDIA CP and audio software, does disabling them from startup decrease their respective performance, i.e. gaming, movies, music?

About the SFC /scannow, it says: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

Dear Alvin93,

CAUTION (Should read as healthy)

AND 2) SPIN RATE :5400RPM (ideal=7200/rpm)

And what should I do about this?

Additionally, after the MB full system scan I was prompted to do CHKDSK. It says FILE SEGMENT XXXXXX IS UNREADABLE or something like that, and it shows that many segments are unreadable. I waited and accidentally let it restart itself (battery ran out) and skipped the second CHKDSK.
Did I do something wrong here?

I have turned off all unimportant on-boot services and no virus/spyware/malware were detected in scans. It seems I have found my problem. When I did the HD-Diagnostics it returned this result:

253439231 of 1250263727 in 3:49:53

Test Option: EXTENDED TEST
Model Number: WDC WD6400BEVT-60A0RT0
Unit Serial Number: WD-WXA0AC9L7227
Firmware Number: 01.01A01
Capacity: 640.13 GB
SMART Status: PASS
Test Result: FAIL
Test Error Code: 08-Too many bad sectors detected.
Test Time: 21:52:16, February 26, 2011
Does this mean the slow logging-in and sudden lags I've been having up until now were because of a hardware error?

I'm not quite sure about doing a repeated CHKDSK, because the last time I did a CHKDSK (25/2) too many unreadable segments and took like, 5% in 5 hours, since I can't let my PC on for 24 hours to finish it. That is, if it finishes in 24 hours period :(

Then copy out your files and replace the HD if you don't have the time to try repairing it, which isn't always successful anyway.

CHKDSK is now on its 20th hour with 5% completion.
Yeah I think I'll do that, or cope with it until I can buy a new Windows 7.

A few last questions:
-) If I want to install 64bit 7 do I need to change my hardware?, and
-) how to avoid this HD bad-sector? I don't want this to happen again so I better ask the pros and the more-experienced here. :D

In before thanks to all who replied, I learned a lot from you people :).

Hi Alvin,

You cannot always avoid bad sectors, unfortunately, but you can attempt to recover bad data from them, and avoid the system writing files to them again. What sort of chkdsk are you performing? In other words, which switch are you using?

Regards,
Golden

I go to System Recovery Menu which uses "X:" to perform read-only CHKDSK, not sure what it was called. Too many bad-sectors was found and still counting up till now.
