64 bit Windows only recognising 4GB of RAM.

Hi All

I am guessing this is going to be a stupid question, so I do apologise in advance.

I have installed a full version of Home Prem 64 bit, but it only seems to want to detect 4GB of RAM. I only have 5GB installed at the moment, so it is not a great deal, but it is still confusing me.

Another strange part is that although it seems to be a 64bit install it looks like it has been set-up as a x86 not an x64 system.

Does this make any sense?

I have attached a few screen shots to show what I can see.

Thanks for your help, and again sorry if it is an obvious one, I am new to 7.

Welcome Floydian42 :D

Looks like this installed as X64 per your 2 screen shots. You will have 2 Program files in x64 !
The 1st is for the x64 programs & the 2nd (x86) is for 32 bit programs that run in the win7 64bit.

Is this a Laptop or Desktop ?

I see, so the reason I am not seeing the x64 program files, is because I have no 64 bit programs installed?. That make sense. But what about the 4GB of ram limit?

And its a desktop

Do you have onboard Video or a Video card in a slot ?

Also check for maximum memory set to Zero ( 0 )

C:\Program Files\ is your 64-bit (x64) program file folder. The other one is labeled (x86) to distinguish itself as the 32-bit folder for installation.

1 * 1GB DDR2 @ 200MHz and
1 * 2GB DDR2 @ 200MHz

Possible the mis-matched memory :( Best to have all same Brand & Speed ;)

Also there is a setting in the Bios setup for Memory Re-Mapping that should be checked.

I would suggest changing your RAM as what looks like to be a huge bottleneck. To be honest, I can't see how those are DDR2 speeds. To make matters worst, RAM can't run at different speeds. It has to take the lowest. If I may suggest to you some OCZ Reaper HPC RAM. Back in the days, when on special, you could get 4GB of 1066Mhz seed for roughly 50$ with shipping. You would want to check with your motherboard for compatibility. My motherboard is an Asus P5KC. IIRC, we should have the same NB chip and there should not be a problem. Hell, I'm running 6Gb of this stuff at 1120MHz at this very moment. 6.9 in Windows Performance Index for RAM if you are curious

@Floydian42
here is a good program for ram diagnostics rammon by passmark remember to download correct 32 or 64 BIT for your machine.

RAMMon is an easy to use Windows based application that allows users to quickly retrieve the Serial Presence Detect (SPD) data from their RAM modules. It will allow users to identify a multitude of attributes, of which, includes the manufacturer, the clockspeed and other data of their DDR2, DDR3, XMP and EPP memory devices and even some older memory types. It uses SysInfo DLL SDK to gather the SPD attributes from RAM devices. This information provides a snapshot of the available data for each RAM module installed on the system.
