Hi,

Whenever I start up my laptop, It tries to do a disk check and everytime it fails, saying I need to use system restore to get rid of a recent software package installation....

Well, I tried using system restore but it says there's a file system corruption on Windows C: and I need to check it for errors before I can restore....

Anyone know how I can fix this?

Open an elevated command prompt.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/783-elevated-command-prompt.html

At the prompt type

chkntfs /x c: (where c: is the relevant drive letter), hit Enter. (this tells windows to stop running chkdsk at boot).

Now boot into windows and again in elevated command prompt, the following then hit Enter.

chkdsk /f /r c:

Let chkdsk run, it may take a while.

Hopefully this should fix hard disk errors. Also download the hard disk diagnostic for your brand from this site and run it.

Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

If the hard disk passes the tests, you can try reenabling chkdsk at boot.

Thanks, I did that but it comes up with this....

Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

Hey,

No worries. Install and run CrystalDiskInfo. Post a maximised screen capture of the result here.

Thats a Western Digital drive, download the diagnostic here.

http://carrona.org/hddiag.html

Unzip if required, byrn iso to cd, boot from cd and run the diagnostic.

Though I do notice that the reallocated sector count (bad sectors) in that crystaldiskinfo report is above the threshold. Do yourself a favour, backup any critical data sitting on that disk.

So my HDD is failing?
Haven't even had the laptop for a year yet.

Thanks Bill and Golden, I'll have to do that diagnostic another time as I don't have any CDs/DVDs.

Run the HD diagnostics/repair CD test. That's why it was given (twice).

HD's can be repaired and returned to service by running the test in conjunction with http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html from the DVD or Repair CD Command Line.

Another solution to chkdsk loop at Startup is to run chkdsk from the DVD or Repair CD Command Line which is not dependent upon the OS files to run.

I believe your sector counts including reallocated sectors are the RAW values. (Relocated sectors are generally the RAW values)
Furthermore thresholds can be set by the user based on what is accepatable to them.

On the surface your disk looks ok to me. That doesn't mean your file system is fine.

Run the file system check & repair plus the longer scan and repair for bad sectors as suggested earlier. The tools are part of Windows.

Note: Your HDD can fail unexpectedly at any time. Always have a backup - now is a good time.
