Icon to get to Desktop?

I am a new Windows 7 user & am looking to replicate a function that I had in XP. I had an icon at the bottom of my screen which allowed me to get directly to my desktop, eliminating the need to close or minimize every open application. Is there something I can do in this OS? Thanks.

To the right of the time will see a separate bar. Hovering mouse over the bar will clear the screen, click on the bar and that will minimize open windows.
