Don't know what else to try to get Sp1 installed..?

I tried everything my limited computer knowledge afforded me to do in trying to get Sp1 to install. What i've done thus far with my probs. are in this post.

http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...ems-updating-sp1-help-needed.html#post1345808

Where I'm at now is that i can get it to install, but it doesn't complete the configuration and reverts to previous settings. I ran a sfc/scannow again to no avail and still have gotten corrupt files. I'm'not running any antivirus software. The system still runs really well. At this point the only thing I can think of is doing a windows7 repair install to see if Sp1 gets installed that way. Is this advisable, and what can I expect from doing this? Will I lose a lot programs...data from doing this? Thanks for any help in advance.

I did but havent tried it yet. The download is roughly 900mb and the autoupdate for me is the minimum 73 mb. Do you think it will make a difference? I guess I'll give the full package a go and see what happens.

I think MS update would just download it all in small chunks then. On the MS page, yeah, I think those last three ones are the updates, so I'm guessing the 900MB download you mention is the x64 one. When I went for the update I downloaded the iso to be on the safe side, but I'm guessing the 900MB file is just the file from the iso but on it's own. So long as you have a relatively fast internet speed, it should be a breeze.

Just a note, when you get to the installer, there's just a big empty bar that sometimes goes quickly, sometimes goes slowly. Don't worry, it's not crashed or frozen, it just takes ages (over an hour but less than two).

Actually, just read MS's info, and yeah, the small update you see may be the the whole update as they say "if it's for one computer, go for windows update" but if windows update isn't working, go for their site download.

Yeah.. it's just for one computer. I'm just afraid by installing the entire thing over a system that is already up to date save for the Sp1 update, which is I think amounts to 10% of new updated material if already have an updated machine, I might inadvertently upset things even more. My system is extremely stable, save for this update consistently failing to configure itself. I'll just make sure a restore point is set and hope after I attempt the standalone instal I'm able to get back into windows to restore if necessary.

I tried the 900+ mb standalone install of Sp1 and the same thing happened: Installed and right at the onset of "configuring windows" just prior to the log in screen I get the "windows configuration failed, revering changes" I think I'm throwing in the towel on this Sp1 update.

I ran a sfc/scannow again to no avail and still have gotten corrupt files. I'm'not running any antivirus software.
Run an online scan with ESET

  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.

I've ran the online scan and it detected one infected file. It is an installer I downloaded a while ago and could probably be deleted. You think this could be the culprit? The scan said it "could be" a the Win32/Agent.KHUXNSZ trojan.

Im attaching the detected threat.

Did you allow ESET to quarantine it? Do so, if not.

Next, download ATF Cleaner Welcome to the Frontpage - www.atribune.org
Click "Main" > check 'select all' (except "Prefetch") this first time using it, then click "Empty Selected". Do the same for FireFox or Opera if you use either of those browsers.
Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options.
On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".
Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.

Now update Java ..... Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u24 allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u24-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
If you have all other Windows updates downloaded and installed, try SP1 again.
Unplug any USB devices, such as external hard drives, printer, camera, etc.

Ok.. I finally got around to following these steps. I reran the ESET scan and it again picked that possible trojan up and as well something in an app related to Java. ESET quarantined and removed these threats.

I then used the ATF utility as per your instructions as well as deleted my internet history.

I uninstalled in add/remove all things Java related which was one JRE Se17 file, restarted and installed the latest version I downloaded. Tried Sp1 install again and again it fails to configure after install and reverts.

I don't know. But I really do appreciate your help... i really appreciate it. Any other ideas?

Again, i really appreciate the help.

If I remember correctly, in your companion post you said you tried running sfc /scannow and it found some corrupt files but it didn't fix them. Based on the experiences of others on this forum, you need to run sfc 3 times. The easiest explanation as to why that is: there might be a dependency between files. First scan might repair File "E" but File "D" won't be repaired until Files "B" and "C" are repaired.

If sfc still doesn't fix things I'd try a Repair Install just as you suggested in this thread (post # 1.) It will try to fix your currently installed Windows 7 and should preserve your user accounts, data, programs, and system drivers. There are some things that might be reset to default status (see the "TIP" box in the tutorial) but you shouldn't lose any personal info.

Hello!

Another one with this problem! Your SFC shows corrupt built in ATI drivers. You are not the first to have this exact issue. There was some information released about it, and I have forgotten it. Anyway, I remember enough to fix it (the fix uses generic methods which I am more than familiar with)

The last times, one winsxs subdirectory was emptied, and maybe even completely deleted. All it needs is repopulating. In theory at least, that shouldn't be too hard. As long as you have no unexpected complications, I *should* be able to fix you up, but first I need some logs.

Please copy the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder to your Desktop, right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and upload the new file which is created on your Desktop here.

Thanks a lot!

Richard

I've been reading the physion boards and in that post that has been dealing with this failure of sp1 to configure and the instructions to restore those ATI files i saw that somebody was experiencing the exaxt same thing i've been experiencing getting a failure to configure just before the login screen after reboot. He did some digging into his winsx filder and looked into the ATI folders and did some file swaping with files from a populatd folder and was able to get sp1 to configure and install.

I looked in my winsx file and I see four files associated with ATI. When i look into this files I see only one is populated and the us-en file is empty. I'm a little nervous to go moving files and repopulating folders in this directory given i would be doing it blindly but could these four files im attaching be the culprit?

amd64_atiilhag.inf.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_en-us_a84b3670179ab5eb ( empty)
amd64_atiilhag.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_019357585ef99a63 (empty)
amd64_atiilhag.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_03c46b205be81dfd ( populated with a file named atihag)
amd64_atiriol6.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_a909ad21d26d5bd0 (empty)

Should these files be populated?

Thanks again for any assistance.
