Solved PC wont sleep properly ever since installing SP1

Ever since I installed SP1 my PC completely shuts off instead of going to sleep after the specified time, I double checked and havent change any power settings.

When I turn the power on after it tried to sleep I get the initial warning menu saying windows wasnt shutdown properly, so its trying to sleep but for some reason its powering off unexpectedly instead.

The event viewer only shows critical event id #41 (63) Kernel-Power on all the times it has tried to sleep since SP1 installation.

Im running the latest motherboard BIOS and I tried updating the chipset drivers but no go.. Any ideas appreciated.

Going for the simple things first, I'd be inclined to uninstall SP1 to see whether that cures the problem.

To uninstall SP1 you'll need to go into Control Panel/Uninstall a Program/View Installed Updates.

Assuming the original install caused the problem you can then try installing SP1 again.

Hi mathesar,

Most sleep issues are cause by hardware/driver issues. I would say check to make sure all your drivers are up to date, especially the video card, keyboard and mouse.

I would also advise against removing SP1 as it has a host of fixes that could have more a negative effect uninstalled than installed. Your call on this one though.

You might also want to check Event Viewer to see if it's teling you somehing is preventing sleep/shutdown. Here's an example of one I had....

Unfortunately sleep issues take a lot of patience and research to figure out what’s happening and there is no easy/quick answer as anything can cause them.

This sounds like a known issue already hotfixed for SP1:
A crash memory dump file is not created, or hibernation does not work, when you use a SCSIport miniport driver as the startup device driver in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2
It affects sleep and hibernation, and your symptoms are exact.

Thanks, Im not even sure what a SCSIport miniport driver is tho? Im booting windows off a standard 500gb SATA drive.

Should I try the hotfix anyhow?

Yes, it won't hurt - especially if that SATA is a SATA3 drive or the controller it's attached to is capable of SATA3.

It's actually one of the three - ie it can be any one (or all) of the three conditions.....

Consider the following scenario:

• (1) - You have a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
• (2) - You use a SCSIport miniport driver as the startup device driver on the computer.
• (3) - You install hotfix 2320550 or Service Pack 1 (SP1) on the computer.

In this scenario, you encounter one of the following issues:

• If the operating system encounters a fatal error that causes a Stop error condition, the operating system does not generate a crash memory dump file of the system memory.
• You cannot put the computer in hibernation.

Anyway you say you have sleep issues, not hibenation issues so I'm not sure it applies but you can try the fix anyway, it wouldn't hurt.

The fix affects both sleep and hibernation when hibernation is enabled (because the computer is using hybrid sleep, which puts the machine in a partial hibernation state even though it's sleeping...).

I went ahead and ran the hotfix which appears to of fixed the problem, the only odd thing is before I installed the hotfix if I would manually tell the computer to sleep it had a Sleep or Hibernate option, after running the hotfix it only shows a Sleep option now (goto start menu / click the arrow next to Shutdown).

Either way the PC is powering down normally during sleep now and that was my biggest concern, Im sure MS will fix it properly at some point.

The problem isn't specifically Windows, it's some of the things that newer SCSI miniports do that Windows doesn't handle without the code changes in the hotfix to work properly. The reason you don't see hibernate anymore is that you're using hybrid sleep, which is better (machine sleeps in deep sleep, but has all memory in a hiberfil just in case hibernation is necessary or the machine loses power). It's a better way to use the machine - benefits of hibernation with the resume speed of sleep.
