Solved Image your system with free Macrium

should Microsoft without notice slip a patch onto my system, when I start up the next morning and it fails to boot

Yes, there have been quite a few instances of that recently on these forums.

I've used this program for a few years now and it works perfectly. I actually bought the 3 pack and have it running at home on my Win7 PC and our 2008 R2 server with a spare license. Others I have used a unreliable and the scheduled backups start to fail without any reason (O&O for example).

About 6 months ago the hard drive in my Win7 PC started to go bad under warranty. I used a spare drive (yeah, I like to have spares on hand) and the restore from a past backup went flawlessly.

Thanks for sharing your experience with Macrium. It matches what I have seen up to now.

The Linux program that you burn to a CD is to jump start the recovery. You load this program from the CD (change the boot sequence in the BIOS to boot from the CD reader) and then this program will be used to pull in your image from wherever you had placed it.

When your system is completely dead, this is the only way to get the recovery working.

The full version has a WinPE version that you can add custom drivers using a "tool" from their website. The WinPE version adds a few more options that the Linux boot CD doesn't have.

Hirens boot CD (free) v13 has Macrium pe built in if that's important to you. I've tried it and it works fine. Although the restore is a 32 bit app., as you might expect, it has no effect on restoring 64 bit images like mine.

I find the linux boot recovery CD quite adequate. Just check that it boots ok on your system.

How to load a MRIMG (Macrium Image) into VMware Player?

I posted this on the Vista forum. But since it works just as well on Windows7, I post it here too.

Image your system with free Macrium

Over the years I have experimented with different imaging programs. I started out with Norton Ghost which works very well, but is quite heavy handed. Backup and restore cycles are usually approximately one hour and it takes quite some time before you understand the intricacies of the product. I have also used Paragon and Acronis true Image. Both of those are in the same league as Ghost. They do provide though a large collection of function – which, I guess, is part of the reason why they are complex and slow.
One that is easy is the Maxtor One Touch Manager that comes with the Maxtor One Touch Disks. My wife loves it because once it is set up, all you have to do is push the button on the One Touch Disk and off it goes.
Not quite the same but very easy is Macrium. Below you find the four steps to set it up and the one step to run it thereafter. You will notice that the handling of Macrium is as easy as can be. To download the free Macrium, you go to this site:

Grüß Gott lieber Wolfgang
and Hi to all member of this forum!

Thanks a lot for this Macrium's Guide!
I appreciate this.

I'm trying VMPlayer 3.1.4 on Vista:
This application is able to Open entire OS images from:
VMware (vmx)
Virtual PC (vmc)
Symantec backUp (sv2i)
StorageCraft (spf)
Acronis True Image (tib)

but not MRIMG from Macrium Reflect 4.2 :-(

I have an image MRIMG of my VistaOS.
I have the Macrium's Boot CD.

I'd to create a new virtual machine with my VistaOS (guest = host).
But I'm not able to load the MRIMG image into VmPlayer :-(

VMPlayer People wrote:
If the Macrium boot CD can recognize a Player hard disk you may be able to create a new virtual machine in player and use the boot CD to restore directly.
he Linux CD/ISO Image does recognize VMware SCSI Disks and NICs and can be used to restore an image to a Virtual Machine. The program also has a BartPE Plugin as well. So I see no reason why this product cannot be used to restore images to a Virtual Machine.

Macrium Support wrote to me:

"If VMPlayer emulates a standard IDE/Sata hdd interface, then yes the
Macrium
boot CD will work out of the box for you. Otherwise, there is the option to
inject drivers (in this case VMPlayer mass storage drivers) into the Macrium
boot CD."

I'm newbie and dont know what to do. I dont understand.
They say that this is possible...I guess this were a wonderful workaround.
(Otherwise booth Macrium&VMPlayer become useless for me)

Does VMPlayer emulates a IDE/Sata HDD interface?
How to inject "VMPlayer mass storage drivers" into the boot cd?

I'd be very gratefull to you, if you may want to help me with "easier
suggestions", how to get this kind of workaround.

Thanks a lot in advance.
Best Regards.
[ Grüße an Schwarzwald !] :-)

I tried this process. When I start VMPlayer and open the new VM with my OS Vista (guest) fail to load. Boot manager tells: Windows boot failed, a needed device not found. (I never had the DVD of Vista, because it comes as OEM) Is it really so hard to get an image working on a virtual machine? :-(

Thanks mjf for your reply. Yes, I read this link today. I did so. and it seems that MRIMG > to VHD went fine. tomorrow I'll try this StarWind Free V2V converter | Convert VMDK to VHD Image Files for Free at the moment I have difficultities to download this utiliy (*corporate+ mail adress required?!?!): otherwise I should give up with my efforts. too hard for me. If anyone has an idea, I'd very gratefull. thanks.

Macrium wrote: The reason your system is not booting is because you need a different mass storage driver early on in the booting process. It is almost definitely installed as VM's do not emulate exotic hardware. However, it will need to be enabled. my question: the vhd from the utility is regognized. ok. but how to set vmplayer to get the Vista booting process working? macrium told that I have only to enable vmplayer for the driver needed by vista... any ideas are welcome thanks.
