Solved Saving in IE - How To Move Up One Level?

When I download a file from a webpage from IE9 to a specific folder for the first time typically the second file save will be saved to the same folder. However if I wish to save a subsequent file to a folder that is just up one or two levels in the file structure what is the quickest way of doing it? I can't see an up one level button so I have to find the destination folder by navigating all the way from the beginning. Is there an easier way?

Your advice would be appreciated.

Thank you Shawn. This is very useful information so I have saved this for future reference. However when I save various files the save as location will usually vary depending on the download. Let me give an example.

Say I browse to save target in C/Images/PDF Files/Accounts/English.

Say the second consecutive file I wish to save in C/Images/PDF Files/Accounts/Greek.

Normally the second file will go to the "English" folder which was the previous download location. To get it to a new location I would have to browse all the way from the beginning again. C/Images/PDF Files/Accounts/Greek. What I wish to find out is if there is any way to go up one level which would reach the target folder "Greek" in this example more quickly which is just another folder up one level in the Accounts folder. Can this be done?

You're welcome.

Other than manually selecting it, there's not a way that I know of in the "Save as" type dialog windows.

What may make it easier to select common save to locations would be to add (drag and drop) that location into Favorites in the navigation pane though. This way you would only have to select it instead of navigating to it's full path.

Thanks for your thoughts Shawn. Yes this seems to be the case that the location has to be manually selected from the beginning. With other applications when saving to a location there is usually an up one level button which is very useful as a shortcut. Sadly there does not seem to be the equivalent on IE when right clicking a file /save target as and navigating to a location. Good tip about making a shortcut favoutites in the navigation pane. Thanks again.

I am still using IE8, but it does not have an "up one level" button either. It looks like in Vista and Windows 7, Microsoft has switched to a new method of navigating in Windows Explorer. Click on the right pointing triangles in the address bar and a drop-down list of folders will appear. That way you can go directly to the one you want. If you think about it, it's even easier than clicking "up one level" multiple times if the new place is, say, up two levels.

The quickest way I have found to go up one level or anywhere in the path, is to select save as and then click on a location in the path shown in the address window.

Thank you roncerr and pbcopter. I never noticed those little triangles before. I can't see any right pointing triangles but I can see some downward pointing ones in the address bar at the top. Clicking on the second downward pointing triangle from the right does indeed enable me to go up one level. Clicking on the third downward pointing triangle from the right enables me to go up two levels. Similarly with the folders. Clicking on the actual folder in the address bar will take me to another window where I can see the contents and choose the sub folder where to save. This is a very useful tip to know. Thanks for sharing.

That's strange. In my version of Windows 7 the "file Explorer" window shows right pointing arrows (triangles) until I hover over them. After hovering over one, it points down.

Thats interesting. Maybe there are some settings somewhere in Win 7 or IE9 that can make them change. I am using IE9 with Win 7 Ultimate European edition.

Perhaps the "Visual Effects" section of "Performance Information..." for Windows?
