Move up one folder level and open in a new window

Hello,
I occasionally find myself needing to move a file up one level in the directory structure. Which means I need to open the current folder's parent folder in a new window. If I set Tools > Folder Options > Open each folder in its own window, then an alt-up does indeed do this, but I don't want Open each folder in its own window always on.

Is there some other keyboard shortcut I can use other than alt-up to open the parent folder in a new window?

My current workaround is to use the unintuitive navigation pane as a destination for file moving/copying. I suppose I could also use cutting and pasting of files instead.

Is it possible to customise any of the right-click-contextual menus in Windows 7? If I right-click on any of the 'breadcrumbs' in the top of a window, it gives me four completely useless options such as Copy Address and Delete History. I do wonder if the idiots who create Windows 7 ever actually use it. An obvious thing to have in this contextual menu would be 'open this folder in a new window'. Is there any way to add something like that?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

- Paul

What is it that is unintuitive about the navigation pane? I simply use my mouse to drag a file from the folder it's in to the parent folder in the navigation pane and drop it there. Very easy. The default behavior when the destination is on the same drive is to move the file so, if you'd rather copy it, use right-click to drag the file then when you drop it you will be able to choose move or copy.

If you want a keyboard only method you can select the file, press Ctr-C, hit back tab a couple of times to get to the navigation pane, use up/down keys to navigate to the desired folder, press Ctrl-V and you're done.

Thanks, Strollin.

It's the fact that the navigation pane only shows folders, not files, that I find odd and unintuitive. I don't know why Windows doesn't just copy the Mac's straightforward system of folder/file hierarchies, all in one window, and do away with the navigation pane nonsense:

I suppose it's all a matter of what you're used to. I prefer the Windows method to OS X's way of doing things.

I use Windows, Mac OS X and Linux Mint, they all do things a bit different but I don't have an issue with the Windows Folder pane and right-click, Open in new window. Mac OS X gives me a choice to open in a new tab. Linux Mint gives me a choice of new tab or new window. On Mac I can right-click the Finder icon on the Dock and choose a New Finder window.
