Based on the above I would use Macrium for your imaging plus maybe another but not Windows imaging in this case.

For File/folder backup you can use
- Windows file/folder backup (image box unticked) and use "let me choose"
- Any number of other file/folder backup programs (eg. GFI)
- Drag & drop, Robocopy.............

If you use Windows disk management to make another partition it will make it logical which shouldn't matter.
If you want another primary instead then someone will guide you through the use of Partition Wizard (it's really easy).

I would use Windows Backup and Restore and perform an image backup.

I've never, I repeat, never had Windows Backup and Restore fail. I also read and follow directions.

Everyone has their favorite backup tools and backup approach. Mine is strictly Microsoft Win 7 software.

As described earlier in the thread you will see why in this case Windows imaging is not recommended. The recovery partition is "System" and it would be imaged every time. You are not including a normal 100MB system reserved partition, you are including an 11 GB partition.
