What is the point of buying Ultima?

The Ultimate version also has extra tools such as group policy, computer/user management and local security policy, among other things for people who really like to tweak their systems. Otherwise that stuff is probably not needed for novice users.

Edit - oh wait, you're comparing Pro to Ultimate. In that case the Pro version likely has most of the above stuff too.

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.
Ultimate is scam, just like Vista Ultimately. Seriously, how many of us really 'used' any of the Vista Ultimate's "extra, exclusive" features?

According to this MS site, bitlocker stands out to be the most important difference. So if you need that kind of additional security...

Which one is right for you?

I'm a little surprised to not see bitlocker available on Pro.

I think no home user needs win7 ultimate. with vista there have been the "ultimate extras" which made the ultimate edition interesting.
The windows7 ultimate/enterprise-Edition is only interesting for business as the media-center is also available for the professional-edition. only if you know that your business need "applocker", "directaccess" or "branchcache" which requires a server2008R2-Server you still need ultimate if you can't get the enterprise edition.
For home users the ultimate is -in my opinion- useless. get professional and you have all you need. alternatives for bitlocker are available..truecrypt etc.

Just for that Group Policy to automated tasks within firewall, 'cause if you've got another, it disabled the one from windows with i think is pretty usefull. Local Security Policy management, Scheduled Tasks, and so on. For my part i don't want to check everytime i do connect, if tasks are really running in the background.

Of course, most of the computers will be based on Home Premium or Home Basic.

I believe Ultimate is feature identical to Enterprise, but consumers can't normally purchase Enterprise.

They'd mainly get BitLocker (including Bitlocker To Go for USB drives).

There would also be the ability to switch multiple languages.

(And some just like being on the "Ultimate" version so they don't have to worry about missing a feature they might need someday.)

Some might well find those things worthwhile, but most wouldn't need them during home use.

There would certainly be some "power users" who'd want the stuff like group policy above the Home Premium level though.

XP-Mode is desigend for business-applications that would not run within the win7-Environment.

It's not designed for Games or something special which requires 3d-Hardware.

We don't really need bitlocker anyways, with the free Truecrypt software around. I've been using that for years.

How is it a scam? it is only $20 more than pro, i would say those features are worth $20.

i think home premium is far a home user enough, and the the XP mode is no argument in my eyes for the ultimate version, because the most of the user who need XP have an XP licences at home, and VirtualBox is a realy good and free application (only to mention that the 3.0 version get direct3d 9 support, for the moment in the beta state but is works alreay not so bad.)
