Windows 8 Will Take on Mac OS X Lion

I get this horrible feeling that cloud OS just might sneak up on us without much of a fight. It seems to me that most cloud OS features and programs are being marketed at the people that make up the majority of the PC market, but also the people that know the least and could care less how their PC works and where the programs come from as long as it just works.

You know that crowd, the Facebook people. like OMG, Why...does it take soo long.. for me to check my FB status and Email?! Enter Google or MS with the light and fluffy Cloud OS that boots to FB and Email in 3's. O..M.G (pop) now I can Tweet and stuff, in like no time!

Scary really.

I know people that use FB like one would use twitter--updates every 10 mins.

I think most people that use computers on a regular basis know that the Chromium project is nothing more than a back door project. The thing is though, I really like Chromium, just not what Google does with it.

I have not done much reading on OS 8 but I think it's a safe bet it will have some sort of cloud features.

The thing is that Apple are making many consumers believe that life with a Mac is simpler than life with Windows. They lured my parents over to mac's recently and they are both adamant that everything is easier on the mac even though they have to google how to perform simple tasks.

This is simply a clever marketing ploy by Apple to gain the market share with consumers, although their products are very shiny and pretty they do not perform the tasks any easier than a windows system (the tasks that simple users do).

This whole shift has been in part caused by Apples business model providing free support in stores as opposed to Microsoft who of course do not. This ties with the current trend in "fashionable" computing is causing people to make the leap.

I have both an iMac 10.6.7 & Windows 7 PC I recently build. I must say that using Mac's service has been among the best experiences I've ever had with a company. But as far as how each OS works, I'd say they are great in their own special way. But, the reason I'd recommend Windows 7 over Mac is the fact that I have the freedom to build my own computer & add whatever software I want. Except illegally, this can't be done with Mac. A similar Mac Pro would of cost me 3x what I paid.

I use Mac primarily for Adobe PS CS5 Extended. I considered going 100% Mac but found software choices to be thin & $$$. I did tried their basic video editing software but found it geared to beginners & not what I'd need for serious work. I looked at Final Cut but thought the price was too steep & also, frankly, didn't think it was as good as my current software. And, add to that, learning new software can be a real headache.

Here's the thing. If my current video editing software was available on Mac I probably would of never upgraded from XP to Windows 7. Having upgraded, I can say with full confidence that I don't regret it. Windows 7 is vastly superior to XP. Had I seen Windows 7 in action, I would of never bought a Mac to begin with.

On one hand the video looks impressive, but on the other hand what's shown has nothing to do with real work.

Most work with the computer involves typing (either text, or code, or something similar) and graphics. For this keyboard and mouse work just fine. After playing a bit with the iPad it's clear that while touch maybe useful on a tablet, it's not that useful for serious work: fingers are just too big and therefore it's hard to touch with the necessary precision.

So to be honest, I am more interested in the inner workings of the OS rather than in the GUI. Things like file copying speed for example or getting rid of the 32-bit emulation layer. That would be interesting to hear about, imho.

Wow, OSX Lion....a condensed desktop space. Ok.

I honestly believe that the mac os is nothing more than a snazzed up ubuntu. But for Microsoft to make a Windows operating system better than 7 is probably going to be one of the most difficult things they've ever had to do. I've personally played around with two builds of Windows 8, and all I have to say, they're delivering!

I have a question to ask. Every mac person I've ever talked to always say that they use it mostly for PhotoShop. A desktop that's over 2,000 dollars for PhotoShop is to me, politically insane. Is PhotoShop honestly better on a mac?

For video, FCP is very good, yes it's not cheap but Photoshop isn't either yet people still buy them. Final Cut is quite robust, the interface is very easy to use and it's actually quite easy to learn for a complete novice and very capable for professional use. Everyone has their prefs regarding software, some are loyal to Adobe and Sony Vegas, some won't use anything but FCP.

Comparing XP to Win7 is pointless, there's hardly anything worth comparing, the kernels are different, Apples to Oranges. Win7 is a heck of an OS, very well thought out, very flexible, robust and unlike OSX, it caters to hundreds and thousands of different machine configurations.

The reason why I think (but not certain) that Photoshop seems to work better on a Mac and I can vouche for this as well, I believe there's 2 different teams that develop Mac and PC versions and it's possible that both teams don't talk to each other about everything. It would be like providing each team with a picture of the end product and allowing each team to determine how to get there. I believe the Mac team is better than their PC team and the end result has less to do with which OS it's on... again, complete utter speculation on my part with absolutely no evidence.

I've used Photoshop since 1.0. In the old days a Mac was unquestionably superior. Now? Nope. I prefer using it on Windows these days, not because I'm a Mac hater, or because it's better in Windows. The differences today are pretty much just cosmetic, although you can upgrade a PC with ease, which means better PS performance. It's just that after 7 came out, I also thought it was insane to spend that much on a Mac.

I still don't get how people confuse a piece of software with a computer either.
Most the people I talk to that love their MAC always bring up an application that makes it great.
...every single one of them has a pc equivalent now...

I guess I'm guilty but let me explain. A few years ago I was itching to get a new computer. I was pretty fed up with XP, heard nothing but negatives. My Mac-oholic son had been bugging me for years to get a Mac. So then he offered me his older version of Photoshop which was Mac software (Adobe allows ownership transfers). This pushed me over the edge. So, I purchased an iMac & have since upgraded to CS5 Extended. I do own other software for this Mac like Bibble & others.

I have since built a new PC with Windows 7 & think MS did this one right. If I could transfer Adobe software from Mac to PC I would.

Ha, I seriously have no clue, I don't think we used it for color. We used it at the college newspaper in the late 1980s, which was a daily but I can't remember publishing anything in color. I was in media for a while, and I think the gap between Macs and MS (in regard to PS) started closing about 7-8 years ago? You find places today who still swear by Macs for graphics, but they simply don't have the edge they used to.

No, I don't believe so. As others have already said, maybe before Win 7 but not now. I was given Photoshop CS3 in Mac & wound up buying an iMac for it along with some other software. I considered going 100% Mac until I priced video editing software, like Final Cut Pro @ a grand in price, then decided to upgrade my old XP to Windows 7 64-bit & keep using my original video editing software. I liked Win 7 so much I recently built a new PC.
