I'm just wondering whether it's worth going into MSCONFIG and disabling Realtek Audio (if it shows) and just using the Windows sound system.

I'm just wondering whether it's worth going into MSCONFIG and disabling Realtek Audio (if it shows) and just using the Windows sound system.

I would, but I use Realtek HD Audio Manager to separate output channels. I have 2 jacks, one in the front and one in the back. I use the front ones for Skype (listening and talking) and the back one for my speakers (usually to listen to music through the speakers whilst talking on Skype through the headset).

I tried the other solution you mentioned but with no luck.

Just had another look in Device Manager and I've noticed that there's a item under Other Devices called "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus". When I click update drivers, it installed as "High Definition Audio Device". There's is now 4 "High Definition Audio Device"s as well as 1 "Realtek High Definition Audio".

Does this have any relevance?

Well, it proves that the Realtek drivers have been installed, but it doesn't explain why there's no icon in the Control Panel.

You could right-click the device in Device Manager and try to update the driver from there or uninstall the device, and then restart your computer to see whether Windows puts things right for you.

I'm afraid I've tried that too. :S Maybe I should re-install Windows...

In light of no fresh ideas that may be the best option although it somehow feels like a defeat when a re-install is all that's left.

Just re-installed Windows on a reformated hard drive and installed the audio drivers from the RECOVERY partition that the manufacturer has set up. Still getting the same problem.

I've emailed Medion about this, but I'm just gonna call them now. See if they can help.

Just got off the phone with Medion; they suggested that I do a factory reset (included with the machine), although he sounded like he had no idea what I was on about. Gonna try that now.

Just tried a fresh install of 32bit Windows 7, installed the Realtek drivers which went fine. Rebooted and Realtek HD Audio Manager appeared in Control Panel but wouldn't load anything when clicked on. Ten minutes later I check the Control Panel again and it's disappeared.

I wonder whether there's a problem with your motherboard - if so, is your computer still under warranty?

You have my sympathy trying to make any sense out of Medion support as most computer manufacturers' support staff seem to read from a crib sheet and if anything out of the ordinary turns up the mantra is "re-install Windows".

Tell me about it.

I've managed to fix it now. Medion supplied me with a "Applications and Support" CD which contained an older version of the Realtek drivers which worked perfectly. Seems a little odd that the drivers from their website don't work though.
