Hey folks,

I've been struggling with the 'Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working' error for a month or two, maybe more now and it's beginning to really frustrate me.

It only occurs when I'm in a folder with video files, doesn't matter what kind (not corrupt files as it happens across the board) and also when I try to Alt + Tab through windows.

Anyone have any ideas? I've virus scanned with MalwareBytes and also scanned for Spyware. Updated Windows and still no luck.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply, did as you said and all that happened was it opened up the libraries section of Windows. Will see if the problem persists.

Edit - Flicked through some folders then and it happened again, just gonna restart.

I use the CCCP pack with Media Player Classic but I don't think that'd be the issue. Have had the files/codecs installed for a lot longer than the error.

If you shift to Shark007's , it is most likely that the issue will not be there . ffdshow cause such crashes .

At the same time, as Alt+Tab also crashes explorer, you may try to reinstall your graphics drivers .

You do have a bad codec, Mpeg2DecFilter.ax_unloaded. You can try the Cole2K codec pack
It works with many players and file types.

Problem solved it seems. Flicked through loads of folders that I know would of crashed it. And can now alt+tab freely too. Strange how things work thanks everyone, you've saved my monitor from receiving my head through it lmao. :)

Nice to hear that it is solved. BTW, I found the actual culprit .... it is MPEG Video Decoder (Gabest) , a MPEG-1/2 Decoder Filter for DirectShow codec .

Upgrading or disabling it will make explorer free from crash .

For me this problem was related with the DivX codec pack...

This worked for me:

Look at the Event Logs for clues about the crash.

1. Click Start, type eventvwr.msc and press [ENTER}

2. Expand "Windows Logs" category, and select "Application"

3. Identify the entry shows in Red exclamation icon, which matches the date/time at which the Windows Explorer crash occurred. (if u can't find it recreate event!)

4. Uninstall / re-install program that caused the crash - try to open the file to confirm fix.

I got this from a website (file:///C:/Program%20Files/K-Lite%20Codec%20Pack/Info/faq_windows_issues.htm#item2) when my Win Explorer was crashing whenever i opened up folders with a lot of video files.

When the thumbnail view is enabled in Windows Explorer, then it will generate thumbnails for your video files. If something goes wrong during this process, then Explorer may crash. Causes of failures can be corrupt files or buggy DirectShow filters.
Solutions:

  • Update to the latest version of the codec pack. This contains a special plugin for generating video thumbnails. This plugin does not use any external codecs, and is a lot more stable than the standard thumbnail plugin of Windows.
  • Disable thumbnail generation. Codec Tweak Tool -> Thumbnails -> Deselect all
  • Disable thumbnail view. Open Windows Explorer and click on Organize -> Folder and Search Options -> View -> Enable Always show icons, never thumbnails.
  • Identify which DirectShow filter is responsible for the crash and disable or uninstall it.
  • Identify which file causes the crash and remove it. This is only useful if a single corrupt/damaged file is responsible for the crash.
DirectShow filters that are known troublemakers:

  • Old versions of the DivX decoder
  • CoreAVC
  • Morgan Multimedia Stream Switcher
  • Samsung Funbox AVI Splitter
  • Samsung Funbox Video Decoder
  • Voxware MetaSound
  • Indeo Audio
  • Nero MPEG-1/2/4 & AVC video decoder (NeVideo.ax)
Hope it helps
