How come it takes so long to upgrade? Almost seems like it would be quicker just to do a fresh install. Please advise.

The method given for upgrading build 7100 to build 7260 did not work for me.
It went through about 75 minutes of copying files, expanding files, etc. But right after it said Starting Services, I got the error "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed..."
Multiple reboots did not help. I had to use the go-back option to undo the upgrade.
Any ideas what might be wrong?

Sorry it did not work for you. It has worked fine for a lot of others. You are the first one, I know of, where it did not work. I am sorry again, however, I do not have any ideas for you.

No, the power was not interrupted. This was on a laptop whose battery was continuously being charged. Haven't tried running setup.exe again because it is so time-consuming. I may just change course and upgrade the Vista I have on another partition.

Addendum: Just tried upgrading a Vista SP2 which also failed, then tried a clean install, but still got the same error, so something else is wrong, it's not the upgrade method.

As I've posted before, in most cases there are reasons that MS disables the upgrade process between some builds, usually because kernel or system files updates can't be applied thru the upgrade process.

Upgrade at your own risk if you bypass this, you may not be getting the very things the newly compiled builds were made for....
