Startup recovery not helping

Apologize for the re-post. Don't know how to delete posts yet. Listed it wrong I believe.

Sony Vaio notebook PC running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

The computer boots up and instantly goes to a black screen. After roughly 10 minutes, I have the option to run Startup Recovery or boot windows normally.

Startup Recovery does not help and states that it cannot fix the problem.

If I try to boot Windows normally, it takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to start windows. After it starts, the screen resolution is at the lowest setting (appears to be safe mode but it is not). So, I rollback my display driver and re-install. After this, I cannot reach windows anymore.

I also tried the boot up disc but it seems all my recovery options are non-existent. For example, all the System Restore options are gone. I can't return to old settings.

OK. I'll see what that does for me.

I didn't make them yet. I've only had the PC for about 3 months. Should have already I know. :(

Sony installs some pretty decent software. I'd rather not clean install. I back up my college work on my desktop and a usb drive so there really isn't much important to lose. I just need this laptop working because I use it often when I'm away from home.

A new error is coming up now.

wmilib.sys is corrupted or missing

Could be a hard drive issue after all. Crap.

CHKDSC found errors on the hard drive but can repair because of read-only? How can I activate administrator when I booted by CD?

SFC /SCANNOW says that a repair process is in progress and to restart windows? I can't even get to windows...

I may just clean install and see if Sony will help with the lost software? By the way my PC didn't come with a CD (of course). Where can I download a Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit .iso file? The product key is on the bottom of the computer so that is not a problem.

That's radical but does clean everything up nicely. You can download w7 by going to microsoft.com. I can't easily produce the link for you as Microsoft has Country policies and you probably do not live in The Netherlands...

The boot up is faster now but still very slow but at least windows opens with everything seemingly normal. There were bad sectors on the hard drive. Since it is a relatively new computer, I might just contact Sony for a replacement... or repairs... or something.

Going to try to run startup repair again after I defragment the drive. CHKDSK moved a lot of stuff around.

As your laptop is only three months old it will still be under warranty so I think you should consider contacting Sony sooner rather than later.

Perhaps they could swap out the hard drive and transfer the information off your old one before it finally gives up.

Andrew is right.... I'd do that too specially if I had negative results from the disk diag that Theo linked you to. What was the result of that test?

I never could run a test. I couldn't determine what I needed to download for my drive and the model number or whatever returned nothing. The links just threw me to the western digital site and the site was eh... crap?

Uhm nevermind that... I needed to type the model number like... WD3200BEVT.

Yep... dumb mistakes.

Quick scan returned. Error code: 0007
That result by itself tells me to replace the drive. :(

Running an extended scan. I'll post the results asap.

Says no errors. But there are still bad sectors listed. I'm still very much considering a repair from Sony.

As your notebook is new, sounds the best way to go.
