Hello everybody!

Each time my laptop wakes up from sleep (did not test yet with hibernate) Windows 7 crashes. The problam occurs, no matter if the laptop is on battery or not.

My system spec is in my profile if needed, mind also that I'm using Windows 7 along with BootCamp 3.2, because my laptop is a MacbookPro. My guess is about some video card drivers issue, but I still did not find a way to open the dmp files and check their content.

Thank you for your support.

Regards,
Stefano

Hi st1led welcome to SF
It seems that ur Intel Graphics driver cause the bsod.
So please for first step, update the Intel Graphics Software/driver from http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Default.aspx
Or from Apple - MacBook Pro - The new MacBook Pro. Huge leaps in performance.
---------------------
Please post back with any results.

Thank you for answering.

Actually, I cannot find a driver on the Intel page which is suitable for my system. I guess that you're saying that is an Intel drivers issue because of the igdkmd64.sys file being mentioned by the Windows Debugging Tool (which by the way I finally managed to run).

I've both tried v15.22 (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=20037&lang=eng#help) and v15.17 (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=20190&lang=eng) but I cannot proceed in the installation because "The system does not meet the minimum requirements", which means those are not the correct drivers. Moreover, in the Device Manager of Windows 7 I see listed under the "Display adapters" my video card "AMD Radeon HD 6490M". No mention about eventual "Intel HD Graphics" hardware.
I couldn't find Windows drivers on the the Apple website.

Another strange issue, is that the update history of Windows Update reports an update named "Intel Corporation - Display - Intel(R) HD Graphics Family" as failed in the status column. The error code is 0x80070103, so something related to driver compatibility issues.

The Intel Driver Update utility detects these devices on my system:

Code:

Yes, it is the 2.0 GHz version with 8GB RAM and 500GB 7200 SATA HDD.
I thing i know whats wrong.
Well,
Yes you have the Intel HD Graphics 3000 and also the AMD Radeon HD 6490M.
Apple MacBook Pro have 2 graphic cards and the automatic graphics switching system.
The laptop automatically switch between graphics cards accordingly of the usage.
So if its possible try to disable the auto switch, set it to manual and work only with AMD Radeon HD 6490M.
---------------------------
(And maybe is also something wrong with the intel graphic)
But for now try with the auto switching and as always please post back with any results.

Yes, it definetly could be something of that kind. I've digged through a lot of Windows options, but did not find a way to turn the autoswitch off. Neither google seems to have the answer: each topic found is just about autoswitch on Mac OS, but no one says how to do it in Windows. BootCamp seems not to have such option.

The closest thing I've found is an option into the advanced power settings of my power plan: "Intel(R) Graphics Settings". However, changing the value to "Maximum Performance" or "Maximum Battery Life" doesn't change anything and the system still crashes ~5 seconds after recovering from sleep.

-----------------------

Moreover, I found out that I probably should have a "Configure Switchable Graphics" menu when I right click my desktop. Those menu should give me the access to the option for disabling auto switching, but it isn't there.

yes, unfortunately this is an odd situation.
We must find something emmm..... tricky?
You must experiment,
Try to completely uninstall/disable the intel graphic.(i dont know if that is possible in bios)
Check if you have this option,
Go to System Preferences -> Energy Savings,at the top there is an option Automatics Graphic Switching with a checkbox, then below it reads:When automatic switching is disabled, your computer will always use high-performance graphics.
I found also this for you MacBook Pro :: Turn Off Automatic Graphic Switching On AC Power?
Read, try and i will also search more.

Thank you for all this time you're spenting with me :)

I just realized that the "System Preferences -> Energy Savings" option you're referring about is a MacOS feature, not a Windows one: that's why I wasn't able to find it. Right now, Leopard is not installed in my system, so I guess I have to reinstall it. Not sure if changing that option in Leopard will have any impact on Windows behavior, unless that option does some tricky low-level hardware trick.

It is not possible on Windows to uninstall/disable the HD Intel Graphics, just because it doesn't show up in the Device Manager, where I just can see the "AMD Radeon HD 6490M". Even reinstalling the BootCamp drivers leads to an installation error mentioning an "Unidentified Driver" which is "Unplugged" and which was not possible to install the drivers for. I guess this mysterious device is the HD Intel Graphics, which is in my laptop but seems to be totally unreachable.

I cannot even access the BIOS, because I don't think that it exists for Apple computers. I will come up with further results, if I can find anything.

What i meant is Open Firmware,if ur apple use editable Open Firmware, check the possibility.
I dont know if is there any firmware update to fix things.

So, finally I'm here after a couple of days (it has been weekend) spent formatting and reinstalling everything. Indeed, I had to reinstall Leopard from scratch, re-assing the partitions and then reinstall Windows again with BootCamp, but right now the problem has been fixed. This time I kept the Mac OS partition without changing anything, like the 128 unallocated space that Mac OS's Disk Utility leaves between the Mac OS and the Windows partitions... I feel that playing too much with partitions has been the problem in my case.

Moreover, I even disabled the "Automatic graphic switching" in "System Preferences -> Energy Savings" in Leopard. That could have helped too.

Still now I'm not able to find my HD Intel Graphics, still now the BootCamp installation fails when installing that driver, and still now the AMD is the only card shown in "Control Panel -> All Control Panel Items -> Display -> Adjust Resolution -> Advanced Settings -> Adapter". So maybe there's something wrong with that card on my system: I could even think that it's somehow malfunctioning, but I didn't try it on Leopard.

Since I don't care about Leopard at all, the important thing is that right now my laptop doesn't crash anymore while recovering from sleep, so for anyone in the future which will have this same issue, the hint is not to touch Mac OS partitions when installing windows, because my experience is that you can make a mess in that way :p

Thank you panais for your support!

Regards, Stefano

Solution

The problem is under certain configurations the discrete graphics device (AMD radeon in my case) and the Intel GPU driver will conflict with each other and cause a crash in idgkmd32.sys. The Intel device would show up mysteriously after the system wakes from sleep. This problem has plagued my Windows system system since I purchased my iMac in 2011 with a Windows 7 installation and it persisted all the way to Windows 8.1.

The solution is to "completely" uninstall the Intel Graphics driver! Here is how to do it:
1. Go to the Control Panel.
2. Go to System and Security
3. Go To System
4. On the left pane go to Device Manager
5. In the Device Manager's menu select View and Show Hidden Devices
6. Go to Display Adapters you should see Intel HD Graphics (looks transparent)
7. Right Click on Intel HD Graphics and select Uninstall
*8. Make sure you click on "Delete the driver software for this device" (otherwise it will re-install itself).
9. Click OK and the issue should be resolved.

* Don't skip step 8!
