My laptop will not boot. It won't boot from the W7 disc either. I tried re-installing Windows and it just restarted and went back to how it was before. So I tried formatting all drives and I think this was a mistake as now it's refusing to let me select a drive to install onto or even format. It just tells me that it cannot format a partition on disk 0.

It's become messed up to the point that I'm considering getting it sorted by elsewhere. Checking it's still under warranty.

When it comes to computers I am really good at some bits and other bits not so. I have no idea what I'm doing where it comes to a DOS CD and have never used one or even heard of one before now.

Hi Dannyr16,

Can we get some specifics about your laptop.. does it use a solid state drive or legacy

The first thing I'd probably try if your not an expert at DOS is

  • download the latest ubuntu
  • Select the Live Boot option
  • Once booted, open G'Parted and see if the Disk appears in there
  • Then, if it doesn't .. prepare yourself for a long troubleshooting nightmare

Good Luck!

has this been happening for a long period of days or several hours, i had a similar issue recently and it appeared that the laptop had overheated it wouldn't recognize the hardrive so couldn't boot, eventually it sorted itself out.

I typed disk part into CMD and then typed list disks and selected the drive, then I did a complete format of the whole drive. As when you do a format through the Windows disk it leaves parts. That's why you have files such as Windows.old left over when you get onto your new copy of Windows. But if you use CMD and Disk Part it just completely wipes every kb of data.
