It more than likely can do x64 without knowing something about your hardware no one can be certain. Most chips made since the introduction of vista do support 64 bit though. The only real question is if your cpu runs 64 bit instructions or not.

Hi
You can download CPU-Z from here CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting it will tell you if it is 32 bit or 64 bit
in the instructions line if it has EM64T it is a 64 BIT CPU intel ,if its an amd chip it will have somthing like 32_64 bit it will be a 64 bit chip.
Its hard to remember the right numbers for the Amd chip if you do not see 64 it is not a 64 bit chip
Good Luck

How do I tell if my computer can run a 64-bit version of Windows?

To run a 64-bit version of Windows, your computer must have a 64-bit-capable processor. To find out if your processor is 64-bit-capable in Windows 7 or Windows Vista, do the following:

  1. Open Performance Information and Tools by clicking the Start button
    4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33_818.jpg
, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type Performance Information and Tools, and then, in the list of results, click Performance Information and Tools.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • In Windows 7, click View and print detailed performance and system information.
    • In Windows Vista, click View and print details.
  3. In the System section, you can see what type of operating system you're currently running under System type, and whether or not you can run a 64-bit version of Windows under 64-bit capable. (If your computer is already running a 64-bit version of Windows, you won't see the 64-bit capable listing.)

Hello the prestige, welcome to Seven Forums!

There is no upgrade path from 32-bit to 64-bit Windows, it will have to be a clean install and the best way forward, after you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media, is to do a wipe secure erase of the entire Hard Disk Drive and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

You will have to reinstall all the programs/apps that you use as they integrate themselves into the Windows registry and are not moveable from one Windows installation to another so be sure to save the program installers and the product activation keys where applicable.

I also went from vista 32 to win7-64. one of the things that I found out was the easiest way to upgrade was:
  1. Backup all files I want to save
  2. made sure I had all installs and keys for all programs I wanted to re-install but also made sure they were win7 compatable and if not look for an update if available.
  3. downloaded all updated drivers to a cd for my hardware(64bit versions) to save time in trying to get the drivers after installing win7-64bit
  4. install win7(upgrade requires it be started from within previous version but will do a clean install once it begins to install)
  5. install your updated drivers from the cd
  6. go online with windows update and get the latest updates
  7. there ya go simple and easy

This is not XP. Win7 is driver complete in the installer with newer quickly updated via optional Windows Updates.

You only need to import Drivers missing in Device manager, from the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or device.

I would not change out any drivers given by installer or optional Updates unless performance problems point to a specific driver. We can help you determine that.

Tips for getting a perfect reinstall based on hundreds done here: Reinstalling Windows 7

That is all fine and dandy if it has your driver for your nic card. I have 5 computers and have upgraded them all to win7 and it only had drivers for my nic card on 3 of them.

This has improved with Win7 SP1 installers. I also had to provide LAN driver on many installs pre-SP1 but now don't need to as much.

Just in case put LAN driver on stick/CD so you can get online quickly to update the drivers.
