Hi,

It sounds as if you need some type of context menu editor. I'm not sure if Brink has covered this in one of his tutorials, but you could try this:

ContextEdit Download - Softpedia

I've not used so it, so you do so at your own risk. I'm also not sure if you can remove the Format command from the context menu.

Good luck,
Golden

Since formatting is a major operation I think you should slow down when you know you are going to use it for a USB drive. I don't think any key combo will start a format of your OS drive, besides, Windows won't allow it while you are in Windows. Plus if you manage to disable it, you'll have to do all formatting from a command prompt.

If you select the Format option by accident - it won't format the drive.

You get another window first, from which you select format options - just cancel it if you want.

Also, if you try and format the Windows volume - you get a message saying you can't.

No real danger there to worry about.

From an old-timer, back in the DOS days, we just renamed the format.com to something else that only we knew.

The problem is "just another window: click cancel then!"

first, thanks for the replyes, very quick! =]

the partitions i'm worried about, is D: and E:, wich are not the OS partitions...

and the hotkeys problem, is becouse i'm an AutoHotkey (automations of mouse clicks and keyboard keys) FANATIC, ADDICTED!!!
but and this was just a exemple of one thing...

the main problem, is that I work in my computer REALLY QUICK, like playing a game or something (hehe)...

and sometimes I'm going to format a USB Flash Disk, and I almost don't have time to think before DO the REAL FORMAT!!!

what IF one day I format my D: instead? it would be a very good reason to KILL someone from microsoft...

--- 2 solutions seems to be the answer:
Solution 1- Disable COMPLETLY the option if neccesary, like: BROKE, CORRUPT windows FORMAT habillity... (It would be suitable! since I have 3 others notebooks here in my house, just use them to format my USB instead of mine...)

Solution 2- Remove from Explorer Context Menu (right-click).... but I'm thinking it have something to do with Resource Hacking stuff.. and I didn't find any information on the web about this ( just for Shell32.dll from Windows XP... )

LETS BREAK THE THING! Solution 1 ! hehehe
help!

We would rename format.com to !format.com then make a batch file called format.bat and put the command:
!format a: Then when you ran the command to format it would only try to format the A: drive. I doubt that this would remove the command from the menu but it would only allow you to format what ever drive letter your flash drive is set to. But you would have to use the !format to get to other drive letters. Hope this helps.

TJG :)

TJG, thanks, I tried that, but this works only for CMD (Command Prompt)..., the main problem still working (Right-Click, Context Menu, in Windows Explorer.....)

Britton30: I really don't think using the computer TOO FAST is a problem... I think it's the result of years working...
and why did you said "Too fast to read replies" ???
I have read all replies here, and the solutions I have found weren't the awnswer I was looking for, and other replies (like yours) were just critics, questioning the thread question! in another words: diminishing the problem, and throwing microsoft's fault on me!

- These FAST, SKILLED, Windows users are using it wrong!!! to use Windows Explorer you must be very carreful!!!

- OVER TWO CLICKS, YOU CAN FORMAT YOUR ENTIRE HARD DISK!!!

OMG this is absurd...

sorry for my rage, it's becouse I have formatted my windows 2 weeks ago, (and still registry-hacking, setting up, fixing Windows 7 bugs...)

So because you and "fast skilled workers" make a mess of things, explain how that is MS's fault. MS is NOT at the keyboard my friend. I stand by my statements. If one is going so fast as to not see and read a warning window that you will lose info and data, SLOW DOWN then. Seems simple enough. Microsoft has NO fault here in any way.

Microsoft offers only ONE solution to protect your data:

- User Account Permissions, "Guest"s, or Users with NO administrator permissions...

then the Format option would be disabled for Local Disks (I THINK...)

but why there isn't an option for the ADMINISTRATOR USER disable this for himself?

like: you have options to change FOLDERRRR permissions, BUT NOT THE ENTIREEEE HARD DISK????

man, this is (again): ABSURD...

Get a slower CPU. Remove some RAM or force the system to start paging. Trust me, your PC will slow down so much you won't be in any danger of going too fast. :D
