Solved Monitor Size: is 27" too big?

I'd rather use two monitors than go beyond 24" and 1080p. That way, you can run all games in the native resolution of your monitor(s), but you still get a much larger Windows desktop.

I've decided to not get a 27". It's just too much pixelation at my viewing distance IMO (i agree with you).

I could fit two 24" monitors in my limited desk space, but the second one wouldn't be used for gaming due to the bezel being right in the middle. So it would be wasted most of the time (i really don't need two screens for 'work'). I'd also have to move it about to get the good angle (i.e. move one screen out of the way).

Currently, i'm leaning toward saving $100 and getting two extra inches by getting a swedish pump 25" Asus (over the 23" Samsung 120hz). When BF3 comes out, i'll see what kind of FPS i get with my current hardware before making a final decision.

I sit about 1m away from my monitor/tv and I use a samsung 32" led tv.
Sitting that close make it feel like being in the cinema when playing games.
Just hope its a amazing as I hope for racing around in choppers and jets on bf3!

I think the best way to decide is to go to your local computer store and get them to set up a 27-inch monitor, and then choose the distance that seems best for you.

I sort of did that, but these days 'service' doesn't exist - it's all about price. I watched a 720 vid and it looked horrible at pretty much my sitting distance. So that did it for me. At 1080, it looked ok - not great to me.

So now it's down to 23" 120hz vs 25" 60hz. With the 25" being $100 cheaper.

That's a shame about the service, but it seems the way things are these days.

It's a pity you don't live in the UK where we have a retailer named John Lewis who are customer service experts. Nothing is too much trouble for them and it's a rare customer who walks away without buying.

Personally, I'd go for the 23" 120HZ even though it's $100 dearer. For the extra bucks, you are getting HD resolution, which I can vouch from experience is far superior to a 60HZ display.

As ever, you get what you pay for.

I don't actually care for 3D It annoys me. But i would like the smoothness for gaming.. but i would also like an extra 2" lol.

Hi Res large monitor is great

I have been using a 30-inch Apple Cinema Monitor for about 5 years. It has a max resolution of 2560x1600. I believe that the higher resolution helps me avoid the fatigue I used to get looking at my old monitor too long. I use the monitor for word processing. I can view complete pages from the word processor next to my browser that contains my research, etc. For me, I can never return to the smaller screen. If your use will support the higher cost, it will be worth it.

Hi guys, i'm just looking for opinions.

It's time to buy a new monitor (in time for BF3 ) and i have been agonising over a ~23" or 27" (i'm only looking at TN, 120hz for FPS). Unfortunately, all the 27" TN panels are 1080, and not a higher res.

There's a fair amount of debate about whether 27" for the PC viewing distance is simply too big. I'm inclined to agree, especially if the content being viewed is not 1080.

I sit about 80cm, and i believe that is fine for 1080, but not for anything less.

Pity there are no 25" ones - i'm sure that'd fit the bill perfectly

I upgraded to a 23" LCD screen, and find it as big as it is practical. If you are sitting at the normal distance from the screen, and you're looking at a 27" reading a page of text, you're head has to turn left and then right every time you read a line. Can you imagine reading a page of 50 lines? Your neck will get a workout!

My PC and the half-dozen others over the years have only run at either 60 Hz or 85 Hz (if possible). Never 120 Hz.
What video card can refresh at 120 Hz???

I have an ASUS VW246H 24'' monitor, and I love it. It's also funny seeing the reactions of people used to crappy monitors when they see it. I can't imagine going any bigger than this though. For one thing, a 24'' is expensive enough, and I wouldn't get much out of a bigger monitor, especially when I'm already at 1920x1080 resolution, 2 ms response time, etc.

The monitor does the refreshing, i.e. draws a picture 60 or 120 times per second. It looks smoother especially with games and video. GFX cards run much faster than that. The 120Hz is really a newer animal and will allow some 3D possible since it runs twice as fast as a 60Hz, allowing for processing the 2nd 3D view picture.

If i could get a 120hz, 27" TN monitor that ran that resolution (and i could afford it), i would. Sadly, such a monitor does not exist (at least that i know of).

If anyone was interested, i got the 23" 120hz Samsung - 23A750. It's very nice, with one dead pixel at the top right. I will call Samsung about it (zero pixel defect warranty for a week i think).

I cannot see how anyone could go (much) bigger for gaming from where i sit - the quality would surely suffer.

Lol I sit like 4ft from my 32" one, and I've been thinking about going bigger or getting another! BF3 has that effect!!

My bottom 3 are 27's and the quality is great from 2ft away.
