so the original hard drive for my eMachines laptop faailed recently. I went to best buy and bought a new one, it is the exact same hard drive aside from being 320 Gig rather than 250 which is what came with the computer originally. I have tried 2 seperate sets of recovery discs, one that i burned myself and one straight from eMachines customer support. The poroblem i am encountering is that the eRovery process run through with no problems, but when the system reboots to configure windows it goes to the setup is starting services screen and then an error comes up and says "Setup cannot configure windows to run on this computer's hardware. to install windows on this computer restart the installation process". i have tried to install it at least 6 times.

You generally need to install an OS, not recover it because the drivers for the new and old HD's may be different or missing.

DO you have the win 7 dvd?

At a guess, the old and new drives are SATA, and the controller is set to a different mode than it was when the recovery disks were created. (Example: AHCI vs IDE mode.)

Best as suggested to borrow a Win7 DVD or find a Win7 installation ISO to burn to DVD or flash stick using this tool: Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool

Boot and then clean reinstall following these tips to get it perfect: Reinstalling Windows 7

Reset the CMOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS to Optimal Defaults. While in BIOS setup check SATA controller setting. Try AHCI first.

If you need to continue with Recovery DIsks for now, try entering Device Manager during install to uninstall any devices in error (! mark) so install will complete, then update driver from desktop: Device Manager - Access During Windows 7 Installation

thanks for all the suggestions guys, i do not have the win7 dvd so I will try the other options first and go from there. thanks again everyone

Were you able to find a solution to this?

I have the same issue with my Sony Vaio and have recently learned that Sony software is only for Sony OEM hardware. What a nightmare.

I wonder if anyone can help me please I am not too bad with computers but just a few things puzzle me. I had hard drive failure on my HP Pavilion Elite M9277-uk.a so I bought a new Seagate Barracuda SATA3 3tb 7200 3.5 hard drive the original Seagate Barracuda was 500gb but was SATA2 the store told me it would be fine.

I had my recovery discs made when I purchased the computer but I had so much trouble with this computer it needed new graphics card after only 14 months, new keyboard and mouse after only 3 months new psu and now new hard drive so I wonder is that why I am getting message upon completion of recovery that computer cannot configure on this hardware. It did have Windows Vista so what I did was buy a retail copy of Windows7 as I thought I might as well get that anyway. Does anyone know what I must do as I am at a loss of what to do next please.

I have tried installing Windows 7 but am getting the same message that Windows cannot configure on this hardware. My psu is Corsair 600w could it be the new SATA3 needs to be connected to a different SATA at the moment it is in SATA1 should it be SATA3 socket please?

Your BIOS may not be able to handle 3tb HD's which is why the newer EFI BIOS that handle those size drives are coming online now.

Check if there is a newer BIOS update for your HP model.

Most tech enthusiasts won't run the bloated factory preinstall which is worst in the industry on HP's, but prefer instead to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

In your case I'd wipe the HD first with Diskpart Clean Command, unplug all other HD's and peripherals to try install.

If this fails wipe again with Clean command then create and format an Active partition using step 2.2 in SSD - HDD Optimize for Windows Reinstallation to try install.

If that fails try another SATA port. Reset BIOS to defaults: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

We need the exact wording of the error message you get if it's rejected. This may still be the size of the HD.

Thank You Gregrocker for your input

Hi Greg
I cant even get windows or anything to load on the HP machine so I cant do anything and as yet Ive not been able to get to bios and not sure I know what to do if I do get there.

So do you think I may need to buy a new hard drive not as big as 3tb then?

I have seen loads of the same message people are getting on the net so not sure if its just that really.

On my mother board not sure if can give links here perhaps you can advise me it shows 6 sockets on motherboard and my original 500gb seagate drive was connected to the black one which says its SATA1 could that be the problem?

I have recently cleaned my processor unit as I thought at first it was that giving me a problem of sluggishness but alas as was confirmed the other day harddrive failure imminent.

So I can do nothing on that computer as I took out the old drive there is nothing to work on it.

I do appreciate your help and thank you.

Hi Greg I suppose I sound a bit stupid here

The hard drive was only installed today so it cant be infected can it its not been anywhere cant even get windows to load nothing.

Thats weird HP Hardware Diagnostic Tools is checking a drive perhaps its the media drive it comes with but that was formatted too so nothing on that either.

I feel so stupid not being able to solve this. When it finishes this hard drive test will try F1 for bios as F10 just takes me to recovery manager and sometimes I get windows did not shut down properly choose to start windows in safe mode but the mouse and keyboard dont work for me to choose.

My sympathies. ;)

As stated in my original post unplug all other HD's and peripherals when trying the install.

Please start now working through the steps in that post. Let me know if you need help.

Hi Greg I have sorted it now thanks

I have sorted it now Greg thanks it was the bios that was stopping me not anything else so I changed stuff and now have Windows 7 on my sick computer all working fabulous.

However it wont recognise 3tb like you say it only shows capacity 801gb so I have only got 300 more than I had and didnt need to spend £114 on big hard drive no worries the guy in store when showed my old hard drive insisted it would be fine alas what did he know. Suppose it is my motherboard not allowing the rest it happens with ram too doesnt it sometimes.

Thanks for all your time Greg. The store wanted £40 to load Windows 7 for me when I had spent £114 and £77 with them and it took me exactly 4-5 minutes probably wish I could earn money that easily.
