I think old times must have been wonderful for all elder members here hmmm i want Doc Browns Deloreon DMC-12 so i can travel back in time i'm going to be 26 next year and i think our new advance technology is shortening the life time of humans in a way like when i'm sitting next to PC i dont even know how the time passes so fast....

As you get older you tend to look at the past with rose-tinted spectacles, but my teenage years in the late 1950s and early 1960s are full of happy memories.

The end of wartime rationing, rock-and-roll music, young girls in short skirts, plenty of jobs and no worries about the future.

To all our younger generation I would just say, seize the day and enjoy your time because it'll be gone all too soon.

One thing that I had as a 10-14 year old that I don't see now are kids out in a vacant lot playing baseball. Those are some of my fondest memories. I do see a lot of organized soccer leagues these days but I don't really see kids out just making up their own rules for games and playing.

Starter on the floor, dimmer switch on the floor and the "starter handle" was called a crank and could kick the living dog---- out of you.

How about the throttle knob on the dash. Which brought about the old saying (probably never heard it) "pull 'er out and bend 'er over"

That reminds me of the old fart that drove on high beams all the time because he couldn't get his foot up to the steering wheel.

It was nearly 1980 by the time I was old enough to actually remember stuff properly.

Not sure. Dad had a bunch of LPs beside the hifi but I don't know whether those were 45 rpm ones or not.

The LP's have a small hole about as big as your little finger. The 45's have a hole about an inch and a half across. Not sure how many CM that is, I am metrically challenged.

I had completely forgotten about those. They were amazing. You could get some really complex answers seemingly from nothing.

I was issued one at work and we had instruction on how to use it. They gave us a formal test to insure we had absorbed it.

I might add at times they could be amazingly accurate, but that depended on the operator.

45's or called Singles. They had one song on each side.

LP or vinyl is the big black one. Played at 33RPM.
45 smaller black disk played at 45RPM.
And of course compared to a CD.

That, and a triangular mechanical drawing ruler for scale drawings.


Many people do not know that the the U.S. Astronauts had only a slide rule and a CMD line computer system known as AGC that took them to the Moon and back........One of the forerunners of DOS.

8. Listening to Radio Luxembourg for my daily fix of rock-and-roll music.

Why would you have to do that? The English had all of the rock stars in the 1960's.

I was talking more of the 1950s when Bill Haley (Rock Around The Clock in 1956) burst onto the scene.

It was the days when the BBC expected their radio newsreaders to wear a suit, collar and tie and flatly refused to play rock-and-roll music because "it corrupts our youth".

Radio Luxembourg was a radio station not governed by the then UK's stringent broadcasting laws and was the only way we youngsters could listen to this new, fresh music.

By the late 50's the UK was starting to come out of their stringency.

But, it was not until the Beatles went to mainland Europe, and played in the grotto's of Luxembourg, and Germany that they started to receive the recognition they deserved.

In 1958 my Dad had his 1951 Chevy BelAir Overhauled.
It had a OHV 216.5 cubic inches, cast iron block, bore and stroke 3-1/2 x 3-3/4, compression ratio 6.6:1, four main bearings, solid valve lifters, and Carter one-barrel carb it put out 92hp at 3400rpm.

It cost him $93.17 including the rental at the dealership.

The first TV I can remember my family having was a 12-inch black & white. The screen was a circle, not a rectangle like today. == When the TV was getting old and ready to go out, the sound would suddenly go really loud. Who ever was watching would have to jump from their seats and race over to manually turn it down with the knob.

When we bought our first TV in 1953, the only channel you could get was the BBC, which used to have an interlude during the early evening and played the national anthem at the end of each evening's viewing before shutting down for the night.

When I look at today's choice I'm reminded of the Bruce Springsteen song "57 Channels and There's Nothin' On". More is most certainly not better.
