and what would overclocking even do?

if your using stock CPU heatsink, it wouldnt be advised to go to far. And to watch the temps. Speed fan should be avoided.
It sometimes gives rogue readings. apparently my i5's idle temp is 98c...

speedfan tells me my temps are 45c-55c running hot at 55c which is kind of odd i think most post say 65-90 is hot

Try HWInfo - select either 32 or 64 bit depending on your system.

I'm not going to lie mate - even if you could adequately OC both CPU and GPU - it's not worth it for your CPU and card.


Haven't used systemrequirementslab , but depending on the detection type, you could OC'ed up the ying yang yet it will still read ' the default speeds'

As for Black Ops - you probably could run it - but it would be on low. OC'ing simply wouldn't help.

LOL don't freak the guy out OP, i overclocked mine a modest .5GHz. Just don't get too crazy with it and you will be fine

The points been missed - it's a Pentium D CPU 3.40GHz and 8500 GT. OC'ing either will net very little (ie SFA) real world gain for potentially a lot of effort. Assuming that the mobo has the needed OC options unlocked to begin with.

I played COD MW2 with similar specs years ago and I was lucky to get above 20FPS on low/med @ 1024x768. While Black OPS isn't much more demanding than MW2, it's still going to run terribly.

But that's what overclocking was all about when it first became mainstream.

It was about getting more from a low spec machine, allowing it to do things only a more powerful computer could do.

Now with hyperthread 12core i7's overclocking is almost pointless, it just makes an already fast job faster.

Its more about bragging rights.

If you have a high end CPU and dual GPU's there's nothing you can throw at it today that a computer like that won't struggle with, yet people still overclock it within an inch of its life.

OP was hoping for a magic bullet - OCing is not that bullet.

Which is why I always say, Ocing should be done as hobby, because you enjoy doing it.
You'll get so much more out of it going into with that mindset.

Although there are some gains to be had, if its being done for the sole purpose of increasing performance, you may be disappointed.
It typically will not provide that big of a overall improvement.

I always OC BTW

i havent overclocked my latest rig yet. as im still rocking the stock cooler..

but just this minute ordered a corsair H something or other (got lost in all the different models) should be here tomorrow

im not really planning on oc'ing because you say there will be no real point to do so for my pc
i run cod mw1 wawmp and a dozen other pc games just fine and pcsx2 ffx
now to my mobo like i said im not planing on oc'ing my pc but im planing on upgrading my cpu and video card i know how to do it but with my mobo would it be worth it

sad to say but you need better parts to run black ops optimally you can run it but not at a nice frame rate like around 45fps which is were i like it or higher fps for me to enjoy, even 30 somthing fps as long as it dont dip but other then that get a better gpu and cpu a duo core or quad core above 2.0ghz and a mid-high range card i would suggest mid if your on a budget

hey how fast is the xbox 360 and ps3 when it comes to fps
