White Screen on Laptop but External is Fine?

My windows 7 professional 32bit on my laptop has a problem. Everytime I turn it on, my laptop screen is white (and fades in some hints of black) and nothing shows up. However, sometimes I am able to get a display on an external monitor.

Before my computer loads my desktop it does a startup repair. What ends up happening is that it does a system restore and my computer is able to boot up normally on my external monitor (laptop screen still white). Once everything loads, my computer automatically looks for and installs a VGA controller driver (at this point I am suspecting something may be wrong with my graphics card because I no longer have the windows aero theme).

Once the VGA drivers are installed, my computer says it has to restart so that changes can be made. After the restart, everything is back to normal with my laptop screen working again and now I have the aero theme again. What is the problem? I've been trying to fix this for weeks. It should be noted that I can't always get the display onto my external so I have to keep on force restarting (holding onto the power button) until I can get it on the external.

I installed a new driver for my graphics card and it hasn't fixed the problem. I know there is a virus on my computer (file is tdx.sys). I am going to replace that file with a new one following some instructions from another forum but I don't want to do that yet because I am currently writing exams and not much of a tech savvy person. I don't want to mess around with system files until at least after my exams so I can back up everything. What I am hoping for is maybe another way to fix this problem because the virus may not have to do with this. Would love to hear some suggestions!

When you have cured the viral problem we will sort out the graphics problem .Post back with the make/model of your laptop and tell us what operating system was originally installed

I downloaded and used malwarebytes already and it can't remove the problem. I usually use AVG but my friend recommended that I try malwarebytes. I know I've had the virus for a while now but that was way before this problem existed. My laptop is an ASUS W7S model and it came with windows vista (not sure which 32bit version) but that was more than 4 years ago.

skuan have you tried the Asus website for drivers ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download W7S download the graphic driver and install in compatibility mode http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/316-compatibility-mode.html sometimes you can be lucky and not have to use compat mode but the older the laptop the more likely you are to have to use that method

When installing drivers, make sure your account has Administrator privileges. If it doesn't, it may not save the changes.

Thanks for the above suggestions but the ASUS support website doesn't list windows 7 as an OS in the drop down menu. The only thing that was close is the vista 32bit. I did use their drivers before but it caused other problems. The latest VGA driver I obtained was from NVIDIA.

My computer only has 1 account so I am certain I've been doing everything with Administrator privileges.

skuan ,laptop manufacturers modify the graphic drivers to suit their needs !! download the vista 32bit driver from the Asus website and install in compatibility mode this will give you the admin privileges you require

I just reformatted my computer and removed all viruses. The laptop was working for for a day and the white screen came up again....can I assume its a hardware problem?

skuan, When you reformatted the laptop did you reinstall the correct gfx drivers ? If you did and it is still white screening there is a possibility it is hardware/mobo malfunction post back and let us know

Yes I reinstalled the correct gfx drivers. Now my graphics card doesn't seem to work. It says it has problems (Code 43) under device manager. My cousin tested the screen now and said that the lcd is burnt out...but does this have to do with my graphics problem?
