Long application installs, unable to create a restore point

Hi;

My problem is that installing software or running Windows Update takes loads of time (6 minutes longer than usual) while the system otherwise appears to run quickly. Running Win7x64 and Security Essentials.

Upon troubleshooting, I found that my computer cannot make System Restore Points, and it apparently tries to do so for 6 minutes. I deleted all restore points, expanded the space to 100%, and turned off and on system restore, without any success - I cannot create a restore point. My VSS service seems to be running just fine. The specific error is EID: 8193, and the text is:

Failed to create restore point (Process = C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe /d srrstr.dll,ExecuteScheduledSPPCreation; Description = Scheduled Checkpoint; Error = 0x81000101).

Any ideas of what to do next? I'm stuck.

UPDATE: So, I turned off System Restore and now my original problem is solved - installs, uninstalls and updates go along at the speed they did 3 weeks ago. However, I'm left with a potentially more insidious problem. Although I've never in years had to invoke a restore, it's clear I am exposed in a new way, so I will not mark this problem as solved.

Doing a Malwarebytes scan right now.

Please look at the lower left of my post. If you put them there it allows others to see your specs without trying to find it on a previous post.
Check and see if you have enough space allocated for restore.
It's under Control Panel/Advanced System Settings/System Properties/System Protection/Configure. I don't need restore often but when I do it's sure saves a lot of time. Happy computing.

Halloo, I have the same problem to great Restore Point. Win7 Home Premium 64 bit Lenovo Thinkpad. No Restore Point, only Backup Point. Hard disk is devided in two parts C: and Q: represents Lenovo factory Backup size 15,6 Gt.
There is not enough room, space and you cannot change the space. In Ultimate there is clear Restore Point.
----------------------------
I am sorry. I should have answer earlier. The reson was, that Q:-partition was off. C: was on.
Win7 back is on Q:

Same problem here (almost at the one year mark). Same error message and code as TJude. One commonality is I also have an ASRock MB, the Z68 Pro3. I also disabled the restore point feature and I'm using Acronis True Image Home version to make occasional backups. I got tired of trouble shooting this problem.

System Protection failure

I wanted to add to this thread. As problems began to build up, I did a complete reinstallation of Windows. I still have the problem creating restore points, so it seems like it would be a hardware/firmware issue - most likely:

a) a problem with the ASRock mobo or the BIOS.

b) Memory problems (highly unlikely, IMO)

Again have turned off System Protection to get a usable system.

Side Note: 8 hours to install and update windows and applications, and uncountable hours having to react to all the subtleties - it's really an issue. On the other hand, my TouchPad with CM9 is flawless. Even when the occasional nightly beta causes an issue, restoring takes about 1.5 minutes and I NEVER have to fool around with updates or data issues. It just works. Big changes are a-comin' in the PC world. Closed-source is dead!

So, anyone ever figure this out? I need to turn on restore so I can do the Anytime upgrade!

Any ideas of what to do next? I'm stuck.

After two years of trying everything, I finally fixed my System Restore using this post by WalterBerndl: Check if you have a program called "XFast USB" usually installed with the MoBo from the mainboard vendor ASRock.

When trying to create a restore point, it hung at "creating a restore point," followed by the error message: "The restore point could not be created for the following reasons: The creation of a shadow copy has timed out. Try this operation again. (0x81000101) Please try again."

I Googled and came across many others who had resolved the 0x81000101 problem by uninstalling XFAST USB. I was experiencing the problem with ASRock Xfast USB version 3.0.28.

I then uninstalled ASRock Xfast USB (xfastusb) and rebooted. This resolved the 0x81000101 problem.
NOTE: I first tried to upgrade to ASRock Xfast USB version 3.0.38, but again encountered the error message. Also removing it from the Start Up Menu does nothing, as there is an additional driver it installs to your system. Uninstalling it removes this driver

Another example of these "booster" programs is ASUS' "USB 3.0 Boost" But if you don't have those kinds of board, but have any kind of "USB turbo-boosters" installed, you still should remove it. They don't get along well with the Volume Shadow Copy service.
