I've undervolted mine, dunno has anyone noticed....

I believe once our SBE rigs goes underwater and overclocks above 5.xGhz it'll change to 7.9... Seen this on either XS or OCN, sorry can't remember which.

Had the 3960X on 6 different boards while I was writing the reviews with water cooling; had it at 5GHz on two of the boards and the WEI was still hanging at 7.8....

Now, maybe with some exotic cooling like LN2 with extreme OC then maybe you can get it to 7.9. But for what purpose, just bragging rights.

Yeah.. Exactly that!! But wasn't that the main reason the OP created this thread? ;)

Keep in mind that the processor (CPU) is designed to do more than just calculations. It has to keep track of memory, processes and perform I/O. Unlike a graphics processor (GPU) that's nearly dedicated to calculations has already hit over 1 TFLOPS in the current high-end offerings from NVidia and AMD. The CPU is much lower/slower in FLOPS by comparison. It took Intel's "Knights Corner" MIC processor, which has 50+ cores, to break the 1 TFLOP barrier. I don't know where Microsoft set the FLOPS value for a 7.9 WEI score on Processor Calculations but I suspect it's not too far off in the future. What surprises me is that there's not a lot of difference between the i7-960, i7-2600, i7-3930 or the i7-3960 when it comes to processor calculations per second. My i7-2600 (Bone stock) gets a score of 7.6 so I hardly see the advantage of spending the money on an upgrade to get 0.2 points on a WEI score. Or to burn it up to get the extra 0.1 to reach the summit of 7.9.

But, in any case, I admire those that can spend over $3k on a 6-month claim to the Kingship. I remember those days. I think I paid a little over that for the top-of-line Compaq 386/20 back around 1987. In today's dollars, that's probably about $6k so it is a consuming hobby and many of us succumb to the sickness. But I think I'll wait until 2013 offerings to adjust my WEI scores. :geek:

Oh, that easy. Just build a web site and start publishing reviews of hardware. After some high web analytics scores, companies will either pay you to shut up or send you hardware to "review". :)

Try bumping the FSB.
