P8Z68 Deluxe powered eSATA not working

I bought a powered eSATA cable from Monoprice and decided to give it a try today. I plugged the SATA connector into the eSATA powered port on the back of my mobo and the other end to a HDD.

Nothing, the HDD didn't spin up. I unplugged the cable and reinserted it to make sure it's connected securely, then restarted my computer and still nothing.

I searched Asus's website and it doesn't give me information regarding the port whether it's a 5v or 12v as need to power 3.5' HDDs.

There are two eSATA ports (red and green) on the board.
Do you have the cable hooked up to the green port?

It may be a bad board too, essenbe and GeneO have 3 bad ones between them now, two Pro and one Deluxe. Read back through this thread. http://www.sevenforums.com/overclocking-case-mods/2309-post-your-overclock.html

If you are trying to power a 3.5 inch HDD I would think the fact that the powered esata is providing 5v instead of 12v would be the problem.

I only had one bad one I think now Looks like the issues on the second were video drivers, though it had all appearances of a hardware issue. KOW.

Thanks for the replies guys, as mjf and I have discovered the eSATAp port is only 5v and not 12v and 12v is needed to support 3.5' drives. This sucks.

Your right, I found a pdf manual for the P8Z68 Deluxe and it says 5v as well. Essentially making eSATAp port useless.

Green port, it's labeled on the I/O shield as power eSATA.

Yeah, I pulled a 2.5' inch backup drive from my laptop and it powered up just fine. Too bad the port only supports 5v

That was the purpose of eSATAp, single cable for both data and power. Reduce cable clutter. As I have discovered that is only the case for 2.5" drives which makes the eSATAp port useless to me.
