Windows 7 Updates keep failing including SP1

I'm trying to get SP1 because I know it has a bunch of bug fixes and stability improvements for Windows 7, but it along with several updates keep continuously failing.

I've had this problem for a while now, and sometimes it seems like they install fine, but after a restart they usually come back saying they need to be downloaded again. The only updates that have seemed to have completed successfully are the monthly Windows Malicious Software Removal Tools and the Definition Updates for MSE.

Any help on trying to get all my updates, including SP1, to install successfully will be appreciated. Thanks.

Are you sure all this stuff is ok to delete? I have about 4.83 GB of data in this directory. Do you think there is possibly anything important in here?

FWIW, the general recommendation is to reboot twice (wait at least five minutes between, but do not do anything!), then delete all files from the TEMP folder - this ensures that all pending installs are completed prior to the deletion.

Anything that is in the TEMP folder is fair game for deletion- if any program puts data in that folder that isn't meant to be deleted sooner rather than later, then it was written by a moron :)

Dear obidon,
JMH's is a peach of a post! Terrific! Since you have exhibited some doubts as to.temp files, i suggest you download the free version of Ccleaner from here : CCleaner - Download

Another suggestion would be to select under >options>settings>secure file deletion> complex overwrite(7 passes)
Kindly view the snaps below for more clarity:

Thanks for the replies. I tried everything JMH said but it still keeps failing. I did however get all the other updates besides SP1 and IE9 to install successfully.

But trying to reset the Windows Update Components both manually and with Microsoft Fix-it didn't seem to help either. Also the System Update Readiness Tool (64bit) said it installed the correct hotfixes but this still didn't help with installing SP1 from the updates. I get different errors every time.

I've been writing down the Windows Update errors and these are what I've gotten so far after trying several times:
====------====
SP1 and IE9
-----------
Error Codes:
Code D
Code 9C4C
----
Code 800B0100
Code 8050800C
----
Code 80246002
Code 9C47
----
Code 8007000D
----
Code 80070002

Don't know if those will help at all but it's at least something to help diagnose the issue. The more info the better right?

What else do you think I should try? Thanks for the help.

Let's see if VEW reveals any clues ...

Download VEW (even tviewer) by Vino Rosso http://images.malwareremoval.com/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your desktop

Double click it to start it Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 you will need to right click the file and select Run as administrator and click Continue or Allow at the User Account Control Prompt.

Click the check boxes next to Application and System located under Select log to query on the upper left

Under Select type to list on the right click the boxes next to Error and Warning Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 also click the box next to Critical (not XP).

Under Number or date of events select Number of events and type 20 in the box next to 1 to 20 and click Run

Once it finishes it will display a log file in notepad
Please copy and paste its entire contents into your next reply

I see tehre's a couple of problems also involving the Crypto Services.

Please run the following commands from an Elevated Command Prompt
SC QUERYEX CRYPTSVC
SC QC VSS

copy the results to your response - it may give us a clue.

Ok I set the Volume Shadow Copy Service to Automatic, so maybe that will make a difference now.

Here are the command prompt results from querying the VSS and CryptSvc services:

According to the output, the VSS is set to Manual (which is normal) - did you change it after running the report?

Yes I changed it after as I thought that automatic is what Jacee said I should change it to. What should I leave it as, set to Manual or Automatic? And also why?

I like learning as much as possible about my system.

My preference would be to leave it as Manual - that's the default. I have heard that for some situations, Automatic is better, but I have a suspicion that this could cause minor problems at boot, as the service will try to open early in the boot process, and may encounter problems. I have no evidence, either way.

Ok thanks for the advice. I guess I'll just leave it as the default for now.

Are there any other suggestions on how I can get SP1 installed?

I really just want to update to this service pack because I feel like my system is very unstable without out. I tried downloading an HDD diagnostic software just now but it said I needed .NET framework 4.0 in order to install it (which I thought I already had but I guess not.) So I went to download .NET 4.0 but THIS said I should get Service Pack 1 before installing .NET 4.0. Just another reason why I need SP1 so badly.

I must've tried installing SP1 from the updates over 100 times by now just to have it fail every time. Any other things you think I can try for now?

Thanks for all the help guys. Just really want to get this working.

For testing your HD, go to the manufacturer's website, and download the HD test utility from there - burn it to CD, and then boot from it.
The errors showing in your VEW back up yor feeling that your system isn't stable - but I for one can't tell from the report what the actual problem is.
I don't see any results from teh SFC scan or the CheckSUR Tool - if you've run those, please upload the log files so that we can see what's in them.

Let's see if flushing the DNS cache and restoring MS's Hosts file helps.

Copy and paste these lines in Note pad.

@Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0

Save as flush.bat to your desktop.
Double click on the flush.bat file to run it.Vista and Windows 7... right click the .bat file and choose to run as Administrator. Your computer will reboot itself.
