Useless files?

Hi everyone! I am currently using Windows 7 Build 7264 (x86).

My C:\ partition has a total of 29 GB, and my D:\ partition has a total of 157 GB. My C:\ parition (Windows, Program Files... system things) is only 11.8 GB free at the moment, so, in order to upgrade to 7600, I need 16 GB.

I have recently noticed two folders in C:\, which are kinda large...

One is $INPLACE.~TR (572 MB) and one is $WINDOWS.~Q (1.66 GB).

Instead of creating a pattern to explain you the contents of each folders (which took me 15 minutes to do, failed -->), I'm gonna give 2 URLs, each for each folders (expanded).

Media folder is in C:\Windows\Media (same size). Dunno about System32, but I bet the thing I have in this $INPLACE.~TR strange folder is a duplicate or at least a part of what is in the real Windows folder.

Each .jpg can be downloaded 10 times, after that, I'll have to upload them again (unless I get a proper answer ).


Don't say "Your OS is <censored> up". It's not. I just cut the parts you don't need .

So, can anybody help me? There is about 2 GB in those two folders, space which I really need. Since "Media" is also in C:\Windows" (same goes for "ProgramData", "Program Files", "Users" etc. )... Are these two folder useless or not? Can I delete them?

Their properties are set to hidden, not system. My Folder Options are "Show hidden files and folders" and "Hide system protected files", so, these two folders appear as hidden, but not as system, meaning their deleting should not be dangerous... But anyway... It's better to ask first .

So, the main idea (in case you didn't got it yet - this post even got ME confused lol) is : are these two folders safe to delete or not?

A quick google also says that they are left over files from previous installations. Ok to delete.

I don't wanna hear about Google. I only use it for school projects. It turned up that it sucks when it comes to other things (do not attempt to make me change my mind!!!). Google sucks (in fact, all search engines sucks).

So, those 2 GB files were there for nothing... And I uninstalled Microsoft Office 2003, 2007 and Microsoft Visual Basic in vane... lol ) . Thanks for the reply .

Hi Radu4Moto, welcome to the forums

Even though the 'Disk Cleanup' utility delete's temporary files, it doesn't get them all

You need to have 'hidden and system files' visible


Next, navigate to c:\users\[user name]\appdata\local\temp & delete everything in it.
Then to c:\window\temp & delete everthing there.

I would advise disabling 'System Restore' which will delete ALL restore points. The re-enable 'System Restore' if you need it. I've seen this clear GB's worth of DATA.

You will use "cleanup" options then scrowl down and click cleanup leftover install files, and setuplog files. you can also use
"More Options "an remove all but the latest RESTORE files. Not all shown but : surely you get the idea.

Use free program CCleaner(Crap Cleaner) to get rid of crap, hence the name.Do not use the registry cleaner aspect of the program unless you know what you are doing.
Also in options>advanced there is a box ticked to "Only delete files in windows temp folder older than 48hrs" you can uncheck that if you want to get rid of everything now.
CCleaner can also be used to enable/disable startup programs and uninstall programs.
During install it will ask if you want to install toolbar and other crap, just uncheck boxes.

If windows has a tight lock on the folder and will not allow you to delee them, one by one, name them Windows.old, then do a disk cleanup and tell it to delete windows upgraded files.

This is a little trick I learned back in Vista when some folders/files were in use I just could not get rid of.
