Solved Can't play MP4 video files in Windows media player.

Up until recently I was able to play MP 4 video files in Windows media player 12 no problems at all but of late I get volume without any picture followed by an inevitable freeze. I then have to go to the task manager to stop it. It is OK at playing AVI files but I have resorted to using another player (VLC) for MP4.

I have recently switched to a solid-state drive and I thought that may have been the culprit for reasons beyond my knowledge but I reinstall Windows on a SATA drive and experienced exactly the same problems. Have another computer running Windows 7 with no such issues. I should also say that for the first time I have experienced a green screen when playing Flash content on the Web, don't know whether the two are connected.

I kind of miss being able to use the one player for everything so any assistance with this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tryed to change codecs ? Try this: Shark007's FREE Codec solutions - Windows 7 codecs

I have come across that pack of Codecs before, anyway I downloaded them and installed and it didn't make a difference. I think I will just use VLC as my default media player but I must admit little frustrating when it used to work and not even fixed by a clean install.

When MP4's fail to play, most often, it is because they have the wrong file extension.
On the Misc TAB of the Shark007 Settings Application is a button to [Analyze a media file]
Use that tool on an MP4 that fails to play, post the output here and I'll see if I can get them playing for you.

yes, that is what I was asking for.

It seems that it is the most basic of MP4 files and Windows 7 should play that file perfectly all on its own without installing any additional codecs. If you have my software installed (Shark007 Win7codecs), pressing the [Reset All] button in the Settings Application will ensure that the Windows supplied decoders are set to their defaults.

This is for Shark007 (if they're still around here somewhere?)

Having trouble with an .mp4 file. WMP error when I try opening.
I tried the above suggestion of resetting, which didn't work, so maybe not the same problem....

Analysed the file, which only produces:

General
Complete name                        : pathway.mp4
Format                                   : MPEG-4
Format profile                          : Base Media
Codec ID                                : isom
File size                                  : 422 MiB

Gspot doesn't give any file info either....So i'm thinking the file is corrupt in some way????
