Hi,

Both my son who knows a lot about pc and I have tried to get these 2 pc's to see each other with no success. I followed this tut give to me in a different forumn, who also recommended I come here. http://www.howtogeek...ws-7-and-vista/. Nothing seems to work. I followed the tut here for Win7 to set up for file sharing but they list a home group & vista lists a workgroup so not sure how that works, even set the clocks on both pc"s to the same time. What am I doing wrong? any suggestions? I should also mention my printer is a Lexmark X2470. I have also downloaded the win7 drivers for my Lexmark printer.

Thanks
PinkRose

Homegroup is a Win 7 only thing. A Vista PC can't join a Win 7 Homegroup. IMO, Microsoft messed up by calling the sharing capability of Win 7 computers a Homegroup because in previous Windows releases you could have a Workgroup but the default name for a Workgroup was HOMEGROUP. You could change that to any name you wanted such as WORKGROUP or MYGROUP or whatever. But again, it was a Workgroup with an assigned name. Along came Win 7 which introduced the Homegroup which can't be renamed and only works with Win 7 computers.

So to share between a Win 7 computer and computers running Vista or XP you need to make sure you set up a Workgroup on all the computers and the Workgroup must have the same name on all computers you want to be able to connect together. A Win 7 computer can be a member of a Homegroup AND a Workgroup but in order to connect with other than Win 7 computers, it needs to be a member of a Workgroup.

Thanks for the info. Yesterday I had to leave for a while & I will have to leave shortly. I did figure out that a homegroup was a win 7 thing as nothing was working. So I made a workgroup & named it in my win 7 pc but got stumped on how to do it in the vista ( both systems are fairly new to me as I had a xp pc before). When I return later this afternoon I will read the articles & try again.

I have done everything suggested in the 2 links put up. I can only see the win7 64bit on the network from my win7 desktop and only the vista 32bit from my vista laptop, the 2 are not showing up together. This is the problem my son had also when he tried to connect the 2. I'm at a loss as to what to do next. Any suggestions? Also the printer is not showing up on the vista but shows up on the win7 64 bit network. My router is a D-link and I'm on a WiFi that is free here at apt complex. I can see all the other people on the network also.

I followed that guide b/4 coming here, it was recommended by the other forum I am in, they sent me here. Also when my son was here helping me the same thing happened as did last night, after putting in all the settings, we saw both pc's on the win7 & vista for a few mins then poof it went back to neither pc seeing each other, just like last night as I posted above. My son is a pc expert took training for this in college, he tried for 4 hrs with no luck. We both have checked, double checked & triple checked the settings. I did find after leaving the Homegroup that the printer settings were gone on the win7 so in checking that setting became unticked , maybe because I left the Homegroup, not sure so I ticked it again and it's back.

Anyone know what's going on? I'm at a loss, I need to go out for a while but will check the settings once again when I return.

If your son is an expert then you should be having no problems with this at all.
Unless of course there is an A/V program involved in the mix in which case all bets are off. :)

Can you give me an example of what you mean? My son doesn't live here or even in this city and I am no expert.

It just means that if you are running any type of A/V software, especially ones with built in firewalls you would either need to configure the firewall to allow for sharing or better yet, uninstall the A/V's completely from both machines and retest to see if sharing works.

It sounds like you have some type of program that is killing off sharing minutes after you set it up, going by the way the machines disappear from the network as you mentioned before.

I have found the problem, when looking into the laptop I noticed I still had Mcfee suite, even tho I am not using Mcfee now so I uninstalled it and now I see both pc's on both systems. I have both set with a password and was able to get into the laptop files on my win7 but I don't have a password on the win 7 so can't get into the win 7 files on the laptop, also how do I make it so I can see the printer which is hooked up to the win7 in the laptop? Sorry but as I said I'm no expert
