Solved function of DELL led DCR option?

I'm using Dell 19' IN1930, what does the DCR option do (in some presets it's greyed out)? I've put it in Game preset, and the DCR option is 'on', does this effect the longevity of the lcd led?

DCR stands for Dynamic Contrast Ratio Contrast ratio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In essence, it is a means by which the effective contrast ratio of the monitor is increased, leading to sharper images with greater detail. It is only available in certain modes, and is not available in Energy Smart modes. This is because it is typically implemented by dynamically changing the brightness of the backlight according to the image displayed.

Okay, it is there to enhance display quality, but does the constant changing of the backlight minimise the display's life?

Not that I'm aware of. Backlights typically fail on initial power up, when the current flowing through them changes from zero to maximum in an instant. Although DCR means that the current is constantly changing, it is never zero (although it can approach this value). In addition, the backlight will have warmed up (the sudden temperature changed associated with the initial power up is another reason for failure). Of course, this does not preclude the natural failure of the backlight due to ageing.

Thanks for the reply! Erm...so ageing factor left out,it is not that wise to leave DCR on because of sudden temperature changes constantly?

Although there will be slight temperature changes if DCR is enabled, by far the greatest temperature change occurs upon the initial switch-on of the backlight when you power up the monitor.

It's your choice as to whether you enable it or not, but I have to say that it's not all that it's cracked up to be. We have this capability with our TV, but it can cause some pictures to lose detail (for example, someone wearing a white shirt with yellow tie and yellow blazer). With DCR enabled, I cannot pick out the edges between the shirt, tie, and blazer. They all seem to run into each other. Instead, we have it set to Natural and, to my eyes, the picture seems much clearer.

I would say try it and see, only you can make the decision as to whether you find it suitable or not.

really irritating the DCR, turned it off.
