Hibernation stopped working after prog install & PC freeze

After working flawlessly for a couple of years my hibernation now doesn't work: when I choose it, the screen goes blank and there is some hard drive activity but then it stops and just returns me to the screen I was on. Sleep still works perfectly.

Two things happened before this: I installed a backup program called ShadowProtect (since uninstalled) and I had a couple of PC freezes due to a bad piece of software, which meant I had to a hard reboot.

I ran Chkdsk at bootup to make sure the drive was all OK, which it was. I've also disabled and then re-enabled hibernation. I've looked at Event Viewer but I can't find any actual errors, and am not familiar with the program.

Where do I go from here ?

If System Restore was on, I would have tried it

Incidentally, I am all upto date with Win7 patches & updates too.

If I run powercfg after a failed hibernate attempt this is all I see:

C:\powercfg -lastwake
Wake History Count - 0

I'd like to explore other options before doing that ...

I'd try the repair install as recommended by quickdraw2011.

Some other things you can try:

• Make sure you do not have an un-saved theme.
• run "powercfg -energy" CMD and analyze the report.
• Make sure something in BIOS did not change preventing Hibernate.
• Re-install drivers, especially the video driver.

If you don't have backup images consider using those going forward.

After you've done the Repair Install, please remember to turn on System Restore. Helps in such cases.
