I connected my computer to my router though an Ethernet cable. But my computer did not "see" the network. I dropped a wireless adapter into the computer and it picked up the network just fine.

I just built this computer, and installed windows 7 home premium 64bit. Normally I would just use a wireless adapter anyways, but this computer is going somewhere that does not have a wireless router.

Thanks for your time
Brad

Could be something as simple as needing a crossover cable (or conversly, needing a straight through and having used a crossover).

But yeah, specs always help.

This is my first time messing with a hard wired connection. Would the type of cable required be determined by the computer or the router (or both).

Have you tried going into control panel to make sure that wired connections haven't been disabled?

New machine, no wired connection working = you need the wired Ethernet driver for your machine. You might even need the chip set drivers for your board. Try going to the manufacture's web site for the drivers.

Have you tried going to Windows update yet?

Ah yes. Good ole k.i.s.s.
The most simple resolution can so often be overlooked. Glad it's fixed.
