Solved Convert NRG files to Windows lossless format

I have an external drive with most of my CD collection ripped in NRG format. I cannot find the original Nero disk.

I now have a new computer with Windows 7 and I am very impressed with MS lossless. Is it possible to convert the NRG files to the MS lossless format and if so, what is the easiest way?

I'm a newbie to all this so your patience is appreciated: I ran one if the apps from the wiki and converted a NRG file to something called a Disc Image File. How do I get from that to a MS lossless format or how do I get Media Player to read it?

I'm not sure what you mean by "lossless format". That is a term usually used for audio files. NRG is the default format which Nero uses for disc images, similar to .iso or .img.

I'm assuming these are some kind of disc images. I had a bunch of those and when I decided not to cough up the dough for a new version of Nero I used this utility:

I ran that utility and it produced a 500mb file (which is about what I expected for a CD- worth of uncompressed music) which Windows recognises as a Disk Image File. What I am now struggling to do - sorry, my ignorance is coming to the fore - is use this file is some way to play the album or convert it into the Microsoft Lossless format (which I have ripped my other CDs with) and incorporate these files in the Media Player library.

Burn the ISO file to a CD, which recreates an exact copy of the disk the original NRG image was made from.

There are also some utilities which will mount an ISO and treat it exactly as if it were reading the files from the disc itself. This is out of my area of expertise, but if no one comes along with a suggestion I will see what I can find.

EDIT: Just tested it on an NRG audio cd image I had stashed away - played right from the hard drive in foobar.
