Hi,
I really need your help urgently. I bought my computer in China with Windows 7 home basic OS and it was in Chinese, the sales advisor told me that I could get a friend to give me Windows 7 English OS, so I bought the computer. A friend of mine had windows 7 ultimate OS and he gave it to me, I didn't no about the one computer rule so I though it was OK, after about three months of using it, it started displaying the "not genuine' warning. Now I want to buy genuine windows 7 ultimate and this is where I need your help, even though I don't have the windows 7 home basic software but I have the the licence key, can I just buy the windows 7 ultimate upgrade pack? An advisor at Microsoft told me that there is away they can go around that, without me having the windows 7 home basic software. And if so what would be the procedures of doing it. I hope someone can help me here, I need to know if I'm to buy the full version or if I can buy the full version. Thank you.

Hello Kirtie12,

Let me sum up things and tell me if I'm right, you have a Windows 7 Home Premium Key, but have non-validated Windows 7 Ultimate installed. You can have a Windows 7 Home Premium ISO legally from Digital River, here's how you can burn it into a DVD. You can backup your personal files easily with Windows Easy Transfer and restore it conveniently on your new OS or you could backup your files in an external storage device (ie. external HDD). Since you have a Windows 7 Home Premium Key, you should be able to validate your new installation with it.

If you purchase a Full Retail license for WIndows 7 Ultimate, you can simply swap in the Key from the pack to your existing installation.
HOWEVER - there is a caveat. If your current system's activation was enabled by a hacker's Loader tool, then the system is compromised, and its integrity cannot be either assumed or proved. In this case you should do a reformat/reinstall.

You cannot use the same procedure with an Upgrade license, and cannot use a non-genuine system as the basis cor a repair install. You would therefore need to do a Clean install with the upgrade media.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

OK - what's happened, I suspect is that someone got the 'clever' idea. of upgrading to Ultimate using Anytime Upgrade, and the Default Key.
You have two choices, effectively.
1) Revert back to the ex-factory state using the Recovery system - check the manual for details of how to access that - this will destroy all data on the C: drive, so back up to externel media first!

2) Purchase an UPgrade copy of Windows 7 Ultimate - NOT an Anytime Upgrade. If you then re-arm the current installation, you can do a repair install, which should make sure system genuine.

The manual is in Chinese so I can't use that, and I'm not very good with computers so option two sounds a bit complicated to me. Do you think I should instead just buy a full version of Windows 7 Ultimate and just clean install? I don't know
Also let me mention that I'm in china and finding a technician I can explain all this to is very hard.
Thank you.

As I said earlier - one option is to purchase a Full Retail license for Win7 Ultimate, and swap in the Key from that.
No reinstall is required.

Note also that the manufacturer's website will usually have the manual in multiple languages - simply download it and follow the instructions!

I can't quickly find the user manual for your machine - but the Service Manual is here.... http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/insm511r/en/index.htm

[edit- I lied - the user manual is there as well, disguised as a 'setup guide'!]

Thank you so much for your help, you have really been a big help, I think that is much easier actually, Although to make sure that I understand properly, when I buy the full version, all I have to do is go to "activate your copy of windows now" and then put in the licence key? And there will be no problems?

Again thank you so much.

You're welcome.
When/if you get the Full Retail package, you can use the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page to change the Key (or the option that you probably get when you boot the PC) to change teh Key to the one in the package. it will then automatically attempt internet activation as part of the process.
