Are you satisfied with Windows 7?

While it is better than any of the older versions, there is always room for improvement. Unfortunately, typically MS seems to focus on cosmetic changes, or things that I have no interest in. However, from what I have read about future versions, it appears that I will be sticking with W7 for quite a while.

I've used them all since 3.1, liked them all, some better than others.
BTW, had no issues with Vista, am still running it on one machine.

Technology advances, not always to everyones preference but, will advance none the less.

You don't like the fact that it actually uses the RAM that you have installed to make everything faster? I've never understood this desire to have a large amount of RAM sitting there idle, 100% free. Windows 7 will cache things to RAM and use it to make everything faster, as RAM is way faster than your hard drive, SSD's included. This RAM is still "available" to be used when it's needed by another program. I want 100% of my RAM to always be used somehow.

My complaint about Windows 7 is the boot speed is horribly slow on my machines compared to other OS's.

Huh, I've never noticed a single system on 7 having slow boots compared to anything else. So, an install right out of the box, boot slow for you? Or does it slow down after tweaking? (< i find that common actually, people make tons of changes to try to make things better and they get that "gut feeling" that things are improving, but timing with a stopwatch shows a different result").


To the original poster, I find 7 to be a fantastic operating system overall. I've found it to be stable, and consistent. I like the changes with the SuperBar, i like it's ability to run well even on lesser hardware than optimal. There will have to be something truly awesome in Windows 8 for me to plunk down my money to "upgrade" from Windows 7. From what I have seen thus far with Windows 8, I won't be making this upgrade. So many things revolve around that "metro" interface and I just plain don't care for it. A few years ago, Ubuntu Linux introduced a new desktop called "unity" that I found that I didn't like either. Even though that OS is free, I still don't use the newer versions with the "unity" interface. It's just not there yet, for me. It keeps evolving and changing and maybe someday it will fit the way that I use my computer...but at present it doesn't and I use alternatives. < I believe the same will be true for the metro interface for me.

Mabe Windows 7 Seven Service Pack 2 will fix some more of the small bugs that Windows 7 has.

We can hope, but the only service pack that ever made much difference in the versions that I have used, was SP2 for XPx64. However, I wasn't really thinking of bugs, as much as real improvements to performance. I understand that most people are satisfied with W7's performance now, but I'm not among them. Typically, they look to future hardware improvements for performance increases, which is fine, but it should start at the OS. The only way that I can see improvements is by going back to previous versions for a time. It seems odd that small deterioration of performance is more noticeable than increases.

I bought Vista RTM and tried to upgrade my XP computer without internet and updates as I was a total noob at the time, Lets just say the upgrade did not go well. Clean installed Vista on the same XP computer after SP 1 with internet + updates and Vista worked great.

I also bought Windows 7 on the first day of release and clean installed on my second HP computer that came with Vista HP x 64. Windows 7 worked right out of the box and am happy with all of it's features so much that I built my first computer last year which also has Windows 7.

I have also tried Win 8 DP and currently dual booting Win 8 CP and agree with others that there is really nothing in Win 8 to compel me to upgrade (yet) from trusty Win 7.

i still have every windows OS since 3.1. when 7 came out i was leary of it. vista left a very bad taste on my machine. widows 8 i have tried. ill stick with 7 till it runs away screaming and dying.

I'm also a Win 3.1/DOS veteran. Have used most variants since.

Same. Only skipped NT variants and ME. Seven has been my favourite to date.

Even from Seven's first leaked 6801 build, the improvements and excitement were enough to elicit excitement.

Win8 betas - none.

Along with a large amount of people, Seven might be 'my XP'.

Maybe Windows 7 Seven Service Pack 2 will fix some more of the small bugs that Windows 7 has.

There is always room for improvement, but aside from a few bugs, I'd love to see some of 8's new explorer functionality backported to Seven in SP2.

(Doubt that will happen though since MS will lose one of 8's biggest potential non-metro draw cards).

Also miffed at the crap S3 Trio graphics driver emulated for XP Mode, would it have killed them to license something not so stone age >_>.

VM's aren't really intended for graphically intensive things. I don't think it was really a licensing cost issue at all.

I'll chime in as another oldie that started with Dos and Windows 3.1. Also ran 95, 98, and NT4. Skipped ME but loved Windows 2000. So much so that I really resisted switching to XP. Once I did though I ran that for a dogs age too. Then just skipped Vista and went to Windows 7. Its on all my rigs now. I have to say that running it for the first time gave me one of the biggest "wow" moments I can remember. I'm definitely not feeling that with Windows 8. Its more of a WTF moment with windows 8. Windows 7 runs great on all my rigs and even lets me play my old games on the 64 bit edition.
