Hi, i am trying to force .psd extension to be opened by photoshop.

Here is the problem, on my new HP system my C drive is only for windows 7 OS, no personal installs just OS, the C drive has very limed space.

I use my E drive for everything other than OS as it has all the space i need.

So i tried to set .psd files to photoshop thru both registry and also thru control panel. It does not even show me the option for photoshop and when i use browse to select it, it just ignores me.

When i tried to mod the registry, i could not change the user choice parameter, cannot edit it or change it at all.

Photoshop cs3 is on my system, i copied it over from my old computer and photoshop is working fine, it does not show in programs but it does work.

Any ideas how i can force .psd ext to be opened by photoshop in its current location?

And if not how do i take it off paint, i cannot seem to get it off paint default no matter what i do?

Thanks.

Well er, reinstalling it would be the best way to fix that and who knows how many other subtle problems you may have from just copying over the program folder. You should deactivate it on the old computer first or you may not be able to reactivate on the new mahcine (Or needlessly use up one of your two allowed activations).

But to associate a file with any program, right click a .psd file, "Open with" "Choose default program", on that page make sure "Always use the selected program..." is checked, then click "Browse". Then search for the photoshop.exe on your photoshop install folder and select it.

Thanks, this is exactly what i did, and it just igores me, when i choose E:\Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended\photoshop.exe it just acts as like i never chose anything and is still waiting for a selection. I dont know why.

Ok, I guess I don't know why it would either :/

Sorry, all I can suggest is to deactivate your old install (if possible) and reinstall it on the new drive as the "real" solution...

have you tried clicking default programs in the start menu/ associate a file with a program,
look for psd in the list when it opens the window and select change program hopefully it will show photoshop or browse to it, it looks the same as the open with window but worth a try .

Yeah i tried that first time and just tried it again, i even moved the photoshop files from programfiles x86 to just program files to see if it would work. Now when i browse it sees the adobe folder right off in c program files but when i go inside and click on photoshop app file, it wont recognize it.

I also tried to set photoshop as run as admin and also run in xp sp3 compat mode and still nothing. As a test i clicked on a dll file inside the photoshop dir just to see if it would see that and yes now i have a dll file as one of my choices in the default list grrrr... but it just will not put the photoshop app file there. really strange.

So now all my .psd are set to paint but paint cant open .psd files, so unless i can reset it somehow to nothing or change it to photoshop, i have to open photoshop up and manually open each file.

Update i did manage to reset it at least to nothing by deleting the .psd folder in fileext in the registry but still will not show photoshop.

Anyone know how to remove an option from the list of avial programs, i want to remove the dll choice i did as a test before. I dont want the dll file listed in the options.

Here is an update, i did get photoshop to be recognized on the list, what i had to do is i had to go into the photoshop application and change Photoshop to Photoshop.exe Then it saw it. The only thing is that in the registry under .psd file extention it shows Photoshop.exe.exe but i guess that is ok right? I wish there was a better way for it to see it as a exe file rather than change the file name but im lost on that one. It does seem to work though.

I still need to remove the test dll file from the MuiCache also if anyone can help me with that (the open with list)

here is a good resource, and others have had the same prob and they too have fixed it by adding .exe to the file name.

Hi there
depending on the complexity of your installation why not restore from a good known backup (You DO take regular image backups of your OS don't you !!).

Otherwise if a system seems to be hosed up it really usually doesn't take too long to fresh install Windows again.

I have a copy on a 32GB USB stick of "Installables" which are the applications I need to re-install if I have to re-install / upgrade windows. I have these either as .ISO copies or the install files - together with the serial numbers so after an OS re-install I just plug the USB in and re-install the applications.

The main problem is with Windows and Ms office after a re-install there are about 10 zillion updates but that comes from Windows Update OK -- just go out to the pub etc while this stuff is running.

I never like using a machine once the registry has been manually modified or bog standard programs like photoshop don't behave in the way they should .

CS3 is still fine (you only need to upgrade if you use a lot of RAW files and your camera isn't supported in CS3).

Cheers
jimbo

in all honesty jimbo, i think that a simple system restore to the day before the registry changes were made should be ample if Arcs suggestion doesnt cover it.
if any reinstalling should be done then possibly reinstalling photoshop would be the next thing i would try,
have a look at this ...
Is Adoble Photoshop Elements 3.0 compatible with Windows 7? - Microsoft Answers

Hi there
I meant a simple restore from a good backup when everything was working properly !!. Disk space is cheap these days (Ok a bit more expensive after Thailand's floods) but prices are dropping again so you should probably take a backup certainly at least ONCE a week and keep these for say 4 or 5 weeks.

(OS backup only here -- backing up personal data files is another matter).

Then as soon as you notice your machine isn't behaving properly just restore to your last version -- and if that doesn't do any good try the one before.

I think I would have done the CS3 re-install before any of the other stuff -- but if in Windows explorer a right mouse click on the .PSD file didn't give me an OPEN WITH I would have assumed that the computer wasn't 100% working properly.

A backup takes me around 35 mins and a restore about the same time if I need it -- time IMO well spent -- and you can always do your backups before you go to bed.

cheers
jimbo

any amount of different type restores of the system wont make a program compatible with windows 7 if it isn't compatible with windows 7.
if i were the OP i would do a system restore to the period before the registry changes.
then uninstall photoshop cs3 and try reinstalling cs3 in compatibility mode.

I had the same problem and then I figured out an easy way that worked for me. firstly pin photoshop.exe to taskbar then drag a psd file onto it. under "Pinned", right click that psd file and click properties, and then click change and select photoshop (which should now be under recommended applications)
hope this helped
