I've heard good things about WD, bad about Seagate, and I haven't really heard much about Hitachi.
I've heard good and bad about all of them.
That about sums it up.
All drive manufacturers have good/bad drives. Usually it's a particular model or a bad batch which cements a reputation and perpetuates a myth.
For example,
years ago Hitachi Deskstars were known as Deathstars because they were shocking drives. Hitachi now make very good drives, but the Deathstar batch really hurt their reputation for years.
Seagate had a bad model which resulted in a lot of bricked drives. Subsequent drives have been fine, but it's enough to turn some people of Seagate.
WD had a bad batch of 'Green' drives which caused issues for a lot of people. Again, that turned a lot of people of WD and so on and so forth.
These days most drives are pretty much equal in terms of quality/reliability. You'll get good/bad drives from all the major manufacturers.
As long as it's not an Eco/Green drive (like the WD Green) - most drives are 7,200rpm with either 32mb or 64mb of cache. Just choose what you can afford.
WD Black or Blue (Black is quicker), Seagate, Samsung, Hitachi - all good.
I was looking at the refurbished, but I'm not sure I'd trust those.
Personally, I wouldn't either without knowing it's history of what the fault was.
As for the SSD, since your budget is tight and your buying multiple components - it falls under the luxury rather than necessary category atm. Save up and grab a higher capacity when you can.
