Solved Win 7 64Bit not going to sleep all the time.

How can I find out if there is a program or peice of hardware the prevents my computer from going to sleep? Sometimes it does and sometimes it does not.

My displays are set to shut off after 10 minutes, which they do. My computer is set to sleep after 30 minutes. I changed the displays to 5 minutes and the computer to 15 minutes. The displays still shut off but the computer might not.

I'd say check what processes are running when it does go to sleep properly, and check the processes when it does not, and see if there are any odd ones. Does the computer go to sleep if you tell it manually?

Try running a malware scan with Malwarebytes: Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download
Also, try running sfc /scannow in an administrative command prompt (right click on cmd and select "run as an administrator")

Did the Malwarebytes thing. Found nothing. Computer goes to sleep normally if I click on sleep.
I thought you could look in Event Viewer and find something in there. Did SFC also.
I guess I have to start uninstalling programs to see if there is a conflict. Maybe unplugging my USB printer.

Unplugged the printer, still the same.

Check in Power Options that you don't have the setting to prevent sleep when sharing media turned on.

It's in Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > scroll down to Multimedia Settings.

It's set for the default "Prevent idling to sleep".
I have the Balanced plan selected and everything is set to default. The computer goes to sleep sometimes.
I have a book on Windows 7 that deals with more in depth stuff than the "how to use Windows 7 books".

I was looking through the book and came across the Power troubleshooter. So I ran that and it said it found/fixed one problem, the screensaver was turned on. I don't remember turning it on. So I'm going to leave the computer alone and see if it goes to sleep properly.

Then that means the computer won't go to sleep if it's sharing media... You may not be sharing media, but even if media sharing is enabled this can sometimes stop it from sleeping.

Hello HAVOC,

I had the same issue as you did last year. There are a couple of things you can try. Firstly, as CreepinJesus says you can alter the media sharing option in power to "Allow Computer To Sleep".
Also you can go to Device Manager and Uncheck the option for "Allow this device to wake this computer". Do this for both the Keyboard and Mouse, see if that makes a difference.
Also, do you have an external Hard Drive connected to the PC at all?

Also do this for any network interface that you're not using for Wake-On-LAN, or WoL.

If I uncheck "allow this device to wake computer" for the keyboard/mouse. How will I wake the computer? I usually press the space key to wake the computer. I'll disable the media sharing option as I don't use it. I'll also check to see what setting WOL is on. I do not have any external hard drives.

I'll change each option one at a time so I can reply with what ever was causing this.

You'll have to press the power button to switch back on.
It may not be the Keyboard or Mouse to blame but worth trying each one just to find out which is causing the problem.

After running the power troubleshooter, and shutting off screensaver I left the computer overnight. The monitors were off but the comp was still running.
I just changed media sharing to "allow the computer to sleep".
Lets see if that has an effect. I did click on Windows Media Center when I meant to click on Windows Media Player. I never use Media Center, maybe that is searching for media from time to time.

I don't use Windows Media Player or Centre. Didn't like the way WMP handles album art files. I've uninstalled them through control panel so the media sharing option disappears.

I use XBMC and MediaMonkey.

After changing media sharing and leaving the computer, it did not sleep.
It will no longer sleep when I click Sleep from the Shut down menu.

Open a command prompt and enter:

powercfg lastwake
​

This will tell you what woke your computer. i htink it might also give some clues as to what is keeping it from sleeping.

From an elevated security command prompt, you can try:

powercfg -energy -output "<full path>Energy_Report.html"

This information, again, may help you identify the culprit.

In my experience, I never have problems forcing the computer to sleep, however, it sometime will not go into sleep on its own. I have been suspicious of MediaMonkey, but I cannot state with certainty that it is the cause.

Go to use the computer this morning, did not sleep. Ran power troubleshooter and it said the screensaver was turned on again. Last time I checked, screensaver was set to none.

I did the second one and I'm trying to find the file. There are 8 errors, 1 Warning and 19 Informational.

I had a thumb drive in the computer, would that have caused it this time? This was the only time. The rest of the times it wouldn't sleep, there was no thumb drive.

Try googling the instance path value - that might help you identify the specific device.

Google finds nothing. I now have sleep set to 3 min for displays and 5 min for comp.

Found the html file. Typing the command with <full path> the file was not there. So I left it out.

There are:

Those are the errors and warnings.
