Changing taskbar icon size

Hi, windows 7 32bit here, but i have a SLIGHT problem. I really loved XP's smaller taskbar, I don't mind windows 7's big bulky icons, but i absolutely hate the windows 7 smaller icons on the taskbar option.

They are just TOO SMALL to see, and they make the image look like 16x16 images, is there anyway to make them SLIGHTLY bigger? Maybe a regedit hack of sorts?

If you right click on the Taskbar and go to Properties, make sure "Use small icons" is unchecked. If it is already, then no there isn't a way to make them larger.

I don't want them that big, isn't there some in between in the registry of some sorts?

Not that I'm aware of. If there is, someone around here will have definitely figured it out. But as far as I know, there is no in between. It's either small, or large.

It didn't help at all, it reset everything on my desktop, it deleted my documents, my desktop config, everything. I no longer have my firefox bookmarks, my addons, anything, all of it is gone.
I have my everything BUT my user data, thanks a lot.
Edit: after relogging again it fixed it, that's some weird stuff and I don't feel comfy using this application at all

I strongly recommend backing up any information, something you should do before attempting any tweaks. Including pre-programed ones such as tapuz's suggested software.

Icon sizes on the taskbar & custom toolbars

Just another factor to consider - W7 appears to be inconsistent when it determines icon sizes to use.

It sometimes appears to use its desktop settings (I'm using "classic" settings) to determine its taskbar icon size: e.g. icon size, icon horizontal & vertical spacing, window border sizes, etc. This can get annoying if you have a custom toolbar and icon sizes keep changing on you randomly.

I.e., if you select "small" or "large" icons, W7'll use one set of parameters stored somewhere to determine what "small" and "large" means, but then you can go to the desktop settings and, say, make icon spacing smaller, and the icons will be smaller until the display's remapped, sometimes changing the settings to some other "default" values even if those new settings were saved.

the only way i know of changes the red , close window and maximize minimize buttons


If you want to change the size of the taskbar icons themselves and make the taskbar smaller it is the same option as changing the red x for closing windows size, in win 7. thats control panel>personalization>window color>advanced or something like that(my themes are turned off the selection changes) or start(windows circle)>run > C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,Advanced,@Advanced
use: Caption Buttons , default-cutoff is 18 for normal size at 17 all the icons become tiny

im not sure of the default but 18 looks correct.


changing things in that properties dialog window will make windows 7 never look the same again so PLEASE use EXTREME CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION those settings can really do a job on windows, need a reboot afterward, dont do with more than 1 or 2 windows open etc...


its definate pen and paper material before changing anything write down what you change, dont use the apply button only use cancel or ok so you can revert back by cancel, the apply button is certain death.

This quoted post by Ligh7 is a June 2012 post but I have to thank him/her for this info. I changed to a 27", 2560 x 1440 monitor and the taskbar icons at the small setting were too tiny, while set to large were too huge. I Googled for a fix for a couple of hours. Then found this thread. Using Ligh7's tip and changing the "Caption buttons" setting to 38, my taskbar icons are just the right size for me now.
